Holy mackerel!

Holy catfish, rather. This 15-stone, 4-pound catfish (that's 214 pounds to Yanks like you and me) broke records recently when a woman wrestled the leviathan from a Spanish river while on vacation, reports the (U.K.) Daily Mail. As if that feat wasn't impressive enough, the accomplished angler in question happens to be a mere 5'3" in stature, a grandmother, and legally blind. The superwoman, Shiela Penfold, 56, took 30 minutes to bag the beast.

The monstrous catfish, dragged from the depths of the River Ebro near Barcelona, measured a terrifying 8 feet, 2 inches in length. Penfold used halibut pellets as bait to supplement what we presume is her superhuman strength.

"I was exhausted but elated afterward," Penfold told the Daily Mail. "I'm still walking around with a smile on my face. But it goes to show that just because you are blind it doesn't stop you breaking records like this."

After snapping a few photographs of the catfish that will give you nightmares for the rest of your life, Penfold released her vanquished opponent back into its freshwater home.

I believe this to be a fake. The catfish is all wrong. There is no dorsal fin and the long fin you see in the pic should be on its stomach, but with the angle of the head that fin is on his side. Not to mention the tail is oriented wrong also, it should be turned 90 degrees.

A huge fish like that would have been released by a sportsman/woman.

Tex#5 Tex1-22-2010 @ 1:16AM

She did release it, so she must be a sportswoman.

Read the full story before posting a comment. I'm sure you assumed she killed the catfish; however, she didn't.

And here I have been thinking the catfish my late husband caught was big. We didn't weigh it but we thought it must have weighed about 10 pounds. It was the biggest one I had ever seen. I would have loved to have seen this one. I am thrilled for this lady. Way to go hon. Okie

I have a feeling that this is one of those stories that will turn out to be a hoax! There are several things that just don't sound right about it. If it's true, however, congratulations to her!

I just watched a documentary about this particular Spanish river and it has a large supply of monster catfish. In the film I watched they caught several of them.

Catch and release fishing is immoral. Catch and filet is the only way to go. I'd have to buy a new grill for those filets.......

Since our local Long John Silver's discontinued catfish and flounder from their seafood menu recently, this lady should sell this big dude to them and I would feel that I was in catfish "heaven".

I live in Connecticut and said we had BIG cat fish in the CT river. Then I was sent to Mississippi for 4 weeks for work. When I was down there I paid to go "noodling" as in jumping out of a boat in muddy water and walking up to tree roots near the banks of a stream. You have to reach under the roots and find a SUCKER or CATFISH. Then stick Your arm up it big a$$ mouth till it chumps down on Your's. Then the fight is ON!!!! I had 2 helpers just in case in pulled me under. I hit a 5 & 1/2 footer only being in the water for 10 mins. I'm 41 y.o. and I was thinking "JAWS" the shark hit me. We got it on board and took some pictures and I was asked if I wanted to keep it. I let them put it back and watched it swim away. No more fly fish'in for me THAT WAS FUN!!! Then We drank beer and had a catfish cookout back at their dock. BEST FOOD BEST BEER AND NEW FRIENDS FOR LIFE! Thank You fishermen & women from Mississippi. P.S. that CATFISH jerked me around like a fat kid eating a Slim Jim. Any day of fishing is a better day than work!!! ~~~Keith~~~

Keith, I am from Mississippi and I know all about those catfish here at the reservoir. Takes a real man to fish that way. You're welcome to our state any ole time.
