The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is warning pet owners not to feed their dogs Merrick Beef Filet Squares after routine tests detected salmonella in the treats.

Tests conducted in December first showed evidence of salmonella in the dog treats produced by Merrick Pet Care. Follow-up inspections found problems with both the manufacture and packaging of the snacks, the FDA reports. Yesterday, the agency issued a warning recommending dog owners steer clear of the Beef Filet Squares with a package date reading "Best By 111911."

Dogs that contract salmonella infections can be sluggish and suffer from diarrhea, vomiting and fever, though some infected pets may only experience a decreased appetite. Humans are also susceptible to the illness, and could become infected if they don't wash their hands thoroughly after handling the infected treat, the FDA warns.

So far, no illnesses linked to the treats have been reported in dogs or humans. If you or your dog experience symptoms of salmonella, contact your doctor or veterinarian immediately.

nana7#5 nana71-15-2010 @ 9:13PM

China must be trying to kill our pets again.. When will our government wake up and ban all goods from china..

road#6 road1-15-2010 @ 9:30PM

Get your facts straight before you spew ignorance - Merrick products are made in the USA and there is a voluntary recall by Merrick.

jeff#7 jeff1-15-2010 @ 9:31PM

Absolutely! Look for anything you can thats not Chinese. We have been screwed long enough on all fronts by american business leaving the US so look else where if its even possible at this point.

Damn if you aren't right, Road. I guess I was looking at their order site.
For anyone else interested.... Merrick is a USA company with all their ingredients from the USA and manufactured and packaged here also. I can't find out the particulars of this problem, but they seem to be doing the right thing with their voluntary recall of this treat. They also offer a 100% guarantee on all their products, even (as they say) it doesn't match your carpet. Sounds like a good company to me and I'll be feeling better knowing my money stays in the states. Thanks for the tip, Road!

Those people who allow those mistakes to be made, better realize they are messing with a member of people's families. Get it right, always.

Merrick is a good company and in The Whole Dog Journal. Most recently there also was a major recall of choo hooves from many companies for salmonella and it lasted a couple of months. Makes me wonder where the beef is coming from and who else uses it and it most likely is human grade, so where is the rest going...?

REX#17 REX1-16-2010 @ 3:26PM

Thanks for the heads up on Merrick. They usually have good quality, made in the USA stuff. I hope no pets or people get sick from this!

Jane#18 Jane1-16-2010 @ 8:43PM

Merrick generally makes great stuff and all in the USA. Just .. go on a site where pet food is sold and if it is a decent site, they will have the ingredients! My dog loves their food!! Whatever; think it should be announced as soon as it is discovered or all should be recalled. Perhaps they were just not able to account for all the stuff which went out and are just now announcing this. I feelthat they are one of the more responsivble companies which is why I buy their stuff. I never buy Hartz for instance; not made in the USA!!!!! In other countries, there are often other standards.

I have to agree with you Jane. I've been feeding my 2 poodles Merrick for awhile now and I believe their food is one of the better ones on the market. The fact that it's made in the USA is another nice thing. I like keeping my money in the states too. I really believe the company is responsible and they do care about what they put out on the market.
