Last week, Anna and I moved from our small, third floor walk-up in Hoboken to a new place on the ground floor of a house in the New Jersey suburbs. It was a pretty standard moving day, complete with an early morning snowstorm and a flat tire on the moving truck. But you know who wasn't any trouble? Our new puppy Pippi.

Dutiful guardians that we are, we gave nary a thought to how she would react to two guys we hired to help move our stuff, or to the 45-minute car ride to our new place. Pippi gets carsick, a condition that typically makes her shake and drool in equal measure. This time, though, she took refuge in the lap of one of our brawny helpers (he is a saint), who cradled her and helped her stay calm during the trip.

Perhaps because she has more space, perhaps because she feels more bonded to us, Pippi appears to be more relaxed overall. Whatever the reason, she is having fewer accidents than before. In fact, she's done some insanely cute things since we moved in, including insisting on sleeping with Anna's slippers and attempting to French kiss us all the time. (I find said smooches endearing... mostly.)

But this story takes the cake: A few nights ago, when Anna and I were headed for the train into New York City, we said goodbye and went on our way. We were about halfway to the station when Pippi zoomed between us on the sidewalk and pulled up next to us. "Where you going?" she seemed to be saying. "Let me come along!"

We were dumbfounded but quickly realized that a brisk winter wind can blow open our new door when it's not dead-bolted. So I hustled her back, then sprinted to catch up with Anna. We had a laugh, and it made us feel good to have a new friend so desperate to hang with us. Life in the suburbs is fun so far.

Still, we feel like we should be doing more to help her adjust to her new surroundings. Any suggestions on how to make a puppy feel at home in a new home?

Get a blanket that can be just your dogs. Then before you give it to Pippi, sleep with it for a night. So you can get your scent on it. Then give it to her. It really will help when your away to comfort her. She is already doing this with your slippers.

If you work all day leave the radio on at a decent volume. I do this for my dog. It distracts them from noises outside and lets them hear either music or someone talking. Also I do not cage my dog, she is a 4yr old white Amer bull dog. Her favorite spot is the couch.
