Modkat Litter Box pictureModkat

Cat owners have long attempted to minimize the stink, unsightliness and stray litter granules associated with traditional litter boxes. Two alternatives are to teach your cat to use the toilet (good luck), or invest in the CatGenie, a fairly expensive and complicated apparatus that sifts through the litter and flings the poo away, but requires connection to a power source, water line and a drain.

The ModKat purports to be a simpler solution, billing itself as "the world's smartest looking, most functional cat litter box." It's hard to argue with the first claim, as the primary-colored cubes won't look out of place in any Ikea-furnished apartment (especially if you've still got your old iMac sitting around).

The ModKat is intended to limit litter tracking by offering entry from the top. The cube's roof features a generously sized entrance, as well as a grate designed to catch stray litter upon exit. We weren't sure if our cat would balk at climbing in from above to do her business, but she had no problem at all and adapted immediately. According to ModKat's FAQ, this is typical.

The box is slightly wider than our regular litter box, but otherwise the design is great. It comes with a reusable tarpaulin liner and a scoop that hangs from the box's side when not in use. When it's time for cleaning, you press a button on the side and the roof swivels down, allowing easy access.

At $180, the Modkat is pricey but worth it. Think of it less as a litter box and more as a piece of functional art.

this thing is far from pretty and it doesnt even look functional did they take into consideration senior cats they dont climb much , just scoop the turds and get over it!!

shannon#2 shannon12-28-2009 @ 9:59AM

yea for something that doesnt clean itself its not worth $180. plus it dont have matching liners, if it is so stylish, why dont it have matching liners?

terminator59#3 terminator5912-28-2009 @ 1:20PM

I agree with jojo. Senior cats will not be able to use this thing and at $180, I will use my $10 broom and sweep the floor.

PEPPA#4 PEPPA12-28-2009 @ 10:01AM

TWO CATS HERE.... THIS IS A FOOLISH PIECE OF EQUIPMENT.... ESPECIALLY IF YOUR LITTLE ONES ARE SENIORS !

AT $180.00 ?????? IT'S A LAUGHABLE PRICE FOR A PIECE OF PLASTIC .

Jenni#5 Jenni12-28-2009 @ 10:35AM

For years I have used the big storage bins with a hole cut out of the lid. My cats have no problem with it, at approximately $12.99. $180 for this?? I agree, a waste of money.

Annie#6 Annie12-28-2009 @ 10:28PM

I love the idea of the plastic storage container as a litter box. I never thought of that..Thanks for a great idea! I already have one I can transform into a much larger litter box than I have now. I wonder if it would work just as well to cut an entrance in one of the ends? I only have one cat, but he's a GIANT Siamese and man does his p**p stink! My biggest problem (besides the smell), is my Pug likes to stick her head in the entrance and have a "snack". Maybe the top entrance is a better idea for both reasons! lol

Jenni#7 Jenni12-28-2009 @ 3:28PM

Annie, I have cut holes in the ends as well. One of the things I like about the hole in the top, is that I can put a very deep layer of litter in it! Rarely does the pee get down to the bottom to soil the plastic. I usually use at least 30 pounds of clumping litter. With the hole in the top, there is also less litter tracked.

LMAO... I bought a similar made cat box several years ago for $35. It is called Clever Cat. The top lifts off and has an entry hole in it. You can buy the liners for it but I use large trash bags 30 gallon size and they work great. Our cats are all seniors and use this box. It works great. There is less tracking of litter and they can't kick it out. You could buy a plastic tub cut a hole in the top and it would work the same. They still make the Clever Cat. I think Petsmart carries it. Probably other companies too. Since the trash runs 2 times a week here in Florida we just pick up the liner and throw it away and put a new liner in it and fill with new cat litter. We also have the same cat box out on the lanai. Our cats are fine with them. But, $180 that just makes me laugh.

Vicky#9 Vicky12-28-2009 @ 1:13PM

hey, i have the clever cat! thanks for letting me know i can use the 30-gallon trash bags. i love it because my dogs cant go "cleaning" it for me, LOL

RoeC#10 RoeC12-28-2009 @ 1:14PM

I also use the clever cat. Cost me around $35. Same concept just not as pretty. but to save the $150 i think I can live with a grey box instead of blue. However, they still track the litter out.

Annie#11 Annie12-28-2009 @ 2:25PM

ROE, my cat tracks litter out too, so I bought one of those so called "magnetic" little rugs you put in front of the litter box to "catch" the excess litter. It cost less than $10 but does not work! Oh, it catches some of the litter when the cat first jumps out of his box, but most of it still goes on the carpet.

I have four cats one of whom has some kind of nerve damage or something so her hind end isn't very stable. I just use the cheapie plastic boxes, no liner. Liners always got ripped then I would have a worse mess when I trusted I could get them from the box to the trash! For litter I use pine shavings - the small animal bedding. Yes, when it tracks it looks bad BUT it doesn't sink into the carpet or clump up between the cats' toes like a boot! Also it is small enough to vacuum up easily. A huge six dollar bag lasts me a month or more, as well. Sometimes I use baking soda for some added freshness. With multiple cats you need multiple boxes and 180 a pop is not happening.

Ahahahahah they are soooooooooo funny!

Just bought a litter box called Roll'n Clean made by Omega Paw $29.95. Was a little skeptical but so far it works well. Cleaning is easy just roll it on its side the bad stuff empties into a bin and the remaining litter goes through a screen back into the bottom of the box. Pull out the refuse bin and dump it. Simple enough!

kaitlyn#15 kaitlyn12-28-2009 @ 1:13PM

i wouldnt pay $180 dollars for a piece of plastic with a hole cut at the top, and my cat is 14 years old and I would have to pick her up and put her in it just so she could use the bathroom. She's lazy enough, I dont need crap layin around my house.

Anne K.#16 Anne K.12-28-2009 @ 1:12PM

Geez, cleaning a litter box is not that bad. I have the most basic litter box ever and it's fine.

Richard#17 Richard12-28-2009 @ 1:54PM

I have 2 cats, I still do it the old fashion way a liter box and a scoop. The best way is to do it everyday like I do, theirs not that much and every now and then just add some new liter. We have no smell.

misspriss#18 misspriss12-28-2009 @ 8:08PM

i was waiting to see "the prettiest kitty litter box we've ever seen." uhhh somebody need glasses? its a cube! whats so pretty about a blue cube? and ummm hello, what about a cat that has some extra meat on his bones? that hole looks small. oh and the clever little hook to hang the scooper, nasty! i re use a grocery bag(thoroughly inspected for no holes) to store mine in(and out of sight) and also use it to put the dirty litter in and off to the trash can it goes. but how much do they want for this plastic cube? lmao of this one! i swear if anybody buys this, they need a swift kick. heck qvc(i think) sells these mats that track and hold like 50million pounds of sand and dirt, maybe 30bucks. alot cheaper than this ridiculous thing. i wonder how much the person got that invented this. this blows my mind!

Knadine#19 Knadine1-01-2010 @ 10:18AM

I have a similar litter box, initially because my puppy kept eating the kitty poo (yuck) it's esentially the same. The main difference is you physically remove the top, which is ribbed not a grate, to clean the litter and it was only $20 not $180! It works well for us.
