Saved by the bark! When Welly the kitten went missing from his home in Swindon, England, his owner, Lorna Hayes, was devastated. But just in time for the holidays, Hayes' neighbors' greyhound mix, Susie, discovered the 11-week-old cat in the bushes. By barking in front of the cat's hiding spot, Susie led Hayes straight to Welly, reports the Swindon Advertiser.

Hayes couldn't believe that her kitty -- who was found curled up and frozen -- survived the cold night. "Susie found my kitten nearly dead in the undergrowth – we were ecstatic because we thought he had been caught by a fox or killed by the cold," Hayes told the Swindon Advertiser.

Hayes believes that Welly may have escaped in a visitor's stroller. She started searching for her missing cat the previous night and continued at 6:30 a.m. the next morning.

The pooch in shining armor began barking when she saw Welly in the bushes the previous night, but she was brought inside to avoid upsetting the neighbors. The next day, Susie returned to the same spot and continued her barking, eventually leading Hayes to the rescue.

"Susie is my saviour," Hayes told the Swindon Advertiser.

While Hayes admits she would normally be mad at her furry troublemaker, she's happy that Welly is alive and well. Since his homecoming, Welly has been staying away from the door.

There is always a reason for a dog's barking. Good Dog!

PatrickPain#6 PatrickPain12-23-2009 @ 2:08PM

The dog was barking at the damn cat because it's a cat not because the dog wanted to save it. As for the cold the cat would have servived it's an animal their made to endure the cold.

puppilove#7 puppilove12-23-2009 @ 9:50PM

?? if the dog was just barking bcus it was a cat he wouldv attackd the cat but obviously the dog was barkingfor another reason animals are smarter then you think but domesticated the cat wouldnt be able to survive in the wild especially if the cat was raised in the owner home dude come on dont be so hard headed lol xmas season be a little more jolly/

Shows how much you know about animals, cats evolved as a desert species. Not all can survived in cold weather plus it's an 11 week old kitten! Just cos cats have fur does not mean they don't feel cold, why do you think they like curling up in the sun or somewhere warm in the house? Why don't you try to keep warm in a bush during a cold winter overnight & see how you'r *ss feel after. Plus, it's "they're" not "their"!

Well, Patrick, your observation makes no sense at all. The dog was used to the kitten in the house, knew it was a beloved pet and knew something was wrong. Many dog and cat pets get along well in a home. Mine do! Tests have shown that the average dog has the intelligence of a 12 year old child, and a child of this age would know that the kitten was in danger and would want to have someone know about it!

What a wonderful story at a time of hate and persicution, and rudeness in the US. It takes animals to give us a taste of love among each other.

puppilove#11 puppilove12-23-2009 @ 1:39PM

rudeness in the us??? this wasnt even in the US so leave the us out of it i twas a bout a smart animal saving another gosh

Dee#12 Dee12-23-2009 @ 6:14PM

Why so judgmental? I have met some mighty rude people from many countries besides the U.S. and some very sweet and considerate people in the U.S. and other places. This wonderful true story did not happen in the U.S. Let's see how noble you are - will you admit to jumping to a wrong conclusion here?

Sorry outlaws gun, if you were hoping for a little sense of humor on this site. Your local suicide prevention hotline is good for more laughs than these people. I like animals and happy endings (whoa--no pun folks, honest!) as much as the next person, but c'mon people, smile a little.

We took both our cat and dog sailing with us over the years. Mufasa, our pup, loved the cat, however, since the cat was there first, she use to really beat him up when he was a puppy. This was a love/hate relationship. Then one night as we moored in Marion Harbor (Massachusetts) Mufasa just went crazy! We kept trying to keep him quiet as it was two in the morning in a very quiet harbor. Then we heard this great cry, Kitty was at the bottom of a latter holding on for dear life. At little bit longer and she would have fallen off and been taken away with the current into Buzzards Bay. From that point on Kity was always by Mufasa's side. Mufasa was taken ill, he was only 6 1/2, from the bad dog food and died, she was lost without him. She never accepted our new puppy, and within six months she also died. She was 15 1/2.
