Birmans most likely originated in Burma (they appear in Burmese myths), but no one can be sure as to their true origin. The first modern appearance of a Birman was during World War I, when a pair of the cats were shipped from Burma to France, thus gaining a breed foothold in Europe. By 1925, France had recognized them as a breed. However, the breeding was ineffective and twenty years later, France again had only two Birmans. A frantic program of outcrossing eventually saved the breed, and they were recognized by the Cat Fanciers' Association in 1967.
Partly due to selection during their intense breeding history, Birmans are exceptionally kind cats who are as happy sitting still as they are sniffing around at everything. Birman breeder Carol List talks about what it's like to live with these fluffy Siamese-lookalikes.
"Mystical, magical, enchanting, with soulful blue eyes, a gentle demeanor and found in a rainbow of colors: This describes the Birman. Birman fur is soft, silky and lush, and only requires minimal grooming. The Birman is sociable, gentle, affectionate and playful, and wants to be where ever their people are, expecting love and attention. Some of our kittens look at the TV and try to touch the moving figures. Our Birmans follow us from room to room and love to help on the computer, making the beds and reading the newspaper. Whenever people come to visit, our Birmans are at the door waiting to be greeted and petted and are often in the middle of the living room when company is there. This wonderful companion is a hearty, healthy cat whose sweet nature makes it an ideal pet."
If you are interested in adopting a Birman, it is best to do plenty of research (as always). Talk to owners, and go to a reputable adoption organization, such as Carol's site, or Purebred Cat Rescue.
