Millie the Australian shepherd pictureTom Smart, Deseret News

One Utah dog and her family will have a much happier holiday now that the pooch is home, safe and sound.

Millie, an Australian shepherd, disappeared about three weeks ago from her home in Cottonwood Heights. Her owner, Sue Garr, presumed she'd jumped the six-foot fence in their back yard, and told KSL TV, "Our whole family was absolutely sick."

A woman walked by a storm drain about two miles from the Garrs' home and heard a dog barking from within. She called 911, and a scared, skinny, smelly Millie was coaxed out by the police.

When she saw her family, "She went nuts," Garr told KSL TV.

Before her rescue, the freezing temperatures had most people doubting that Millie could have survived, but fortunately, the storm drain was about 10 degrees warmer than the temperature on the street, reports KSL TV. It's assumed Millie survived on storm water and rats, though we're certain she'll be showered with some tastier treats now that she's home.

While Garr said they don't plan to increase the height of their already tall fence, she did tell KSL TF that one change would be made: "She's going to become an indoor dog."

great another idiot that kept the dog outside to much duh!#$%@ she said millie will become an indoor dog now. sad it took a tragic thing to give the dog some love and attention and warmth of a house!

More disturbing than Millie being in the storm drain is your negativity and nastiness over such a wonderful story! I'm sorry for you. And a VERY Merry Christmas to Millie & the Garrs!

Sorry, I have to agree with Jojo. You keep your pets safe from the start because if you don't, the necessity WILL rear it's ugly head eventually. It's simply a matter of time with animals.

Denise#4 Denise12-09-2009 @ 9:25AM

In many cases, I will agree that keeping a dog outdoors is cruel, but that's not always the case. My lab refused to come indoors until the last couple of years of her life, and only then it was when the temperatures were extreme.

Pat#5 Pat12-11-2009 @ 9:24AM

I sooooooooo agree. Why any person would leave their dog outside is beyond me. If they would do it to a poor defenseless dog they would do it to a child. I have two golden rescues and our female can scale a 6 foot chainlink fence with the greatest of ease. They need our protection all the time just like a child does all the time. Glad the dog is okay and will be inside from now on.

What is so wrong about leaving your animals outside? Especially if you have a bigger dog like Millie... a dog that size needs to be outside, to run around and play. Being stuck inside all the time is more cruel to an animal than letting them run around free in an enclosed back yard.

PatrickPain#7 PatrickPain12-09-2009 @ 11:11AM

You are an idiot! It's a dog they can live outside!

jenthebrat#8 jenthebrat12-09-2009 @ 11:39AM

Yep - thinking the same thing. Keep your pets inside, where they are safe. If it's too cold outside to survive, it's too cold for the dog to be out!

siera#9 siera12-09-2009 @ 12:30PM

I agree Jojo, the idea of dogs being "outdoor" animals is a thing of the past, get with it people!

JO JO PEOPLE LIKE YOU ALWAYS FIND THE BAD AND NEGATATIVE, IN ANYTHING YOUR POOR FAMILY AND FIRENEDS IF YOU ACTUALLY HAVE ANY BUT LIKES DO ATTRACT. I RAISE PRIZE RIDGEBACKS AND OCASIONALLY ONE ESCAPES; YOU CAN TELL THIS LADY LOVES THAT DOG AND HE LOVES THEM ---JO JO DO YOU HAVE THAT ABALITY.

michelle#11 michelle12-09-2009 @ 3:18PM

the article said nothing about the dog being kept outside. the dog was allowed to roam the fenced in backyard freely and now will, seemingly, only be taken out on her leash, so she doesn't get loose again.

bookwoman1#12 bookwoman112-09-2009 @ 1:28PM

Why is everyone assuming the dog stayed outside. Our dog was an indoor dog but was let out in the yard to do her business.

Secondly, Millie is an Australian shepherd and they are working dogs, herders mostly. She needs a job to keep her occupied so she won't jump the fence. Keeping her inside won't work. But I'm glad she's home safe & sound.

Mark#15 Mark12-09-2009 @ 9:41AM

The article said that the dog was "coaxed out"....seems as though she wasn't really "stuck" in the storm drain. Just too stupid to walk out.

Rich#16 Rich12-09-2009 @ 12:32PM

Steak, potatoes and gravy are the last thing a dog needs. Why don't you give it some cake and ice cream for a nice treat to! Tools!

Bill#19 Bill12-09-2009 @ 9:31AM

Millie's name should be changed to Stormy.

amy u#20 amy u12-09-2009 @ 9:39AM

unfortunately, there is no law against stupid people owning pets. Glad Millie is okay and that her owner's eyes have been opened to the dangers of leaving your pet outside.
