Katherine Heigl with a dog pictureJeffrey Mayer/WireImage.com

Katherine Heigl may help patients of the human variety on "Grey's Anatomy", but in real life the movie star has a soft spot for dogs. According to PeoplePets.com, when the actress' charity organization, the Jason Debus Heigl Foundation, found out that Los Angeles-based rescue group Kinder Rescue were looking for the funds to transport a group of small lap dogs from an overcrowded Hollywood shelter to the Humane Society in Nashua, NH the group donated $25,000 to get it done.

Los Angeles' shelters have too many small dogs, such as chihuahuas and terriers, but not enough people who want to take them in. The Humane Society in Nashua has the demand for small dogs, but not the supply. So naturally the rescue group thought to move the supply to where the demand is. For three months they tried to collect the funds to fly the dogs out, but kept coming up short. And then the Jason Debus Heigl Foundation came to the rescue.

The Humane Society for Greater Nashua told WMUR that movies like "Beverly Hills Chihuahua", which feature the cute pups, along with celebrities like Paris Hilton who create doggy trends are to blame for the influx of small dogs in Los Angeles shelters. Luckily, small lap dogs are in demand in Nashua. "The response has been phenomenal," HSGN executive director Karen Bill told PeoplePets.com. "We had more than 40 voicemails Thursday morning from families inquiring about these dogs. I can guarantee we'll have a line out the door starting at 9:30." The dogs go up for adoption this Saturday at the Humane Society for Greater Nashua.

Some "celebrities" are so busy promoting themselves by making tiny dogs fashionable, that they fail to see the negative impact of their actions--discarded dogs. (Are you listening, PH?) Wouldn't it be nice if ALL celebrities who earn tons of our money would give willingly and generously to help others, like Katherine Heigl did for these pups!? What an angel!

These dogs are a 15 year committment. People think we will get a dog like lets get married the sex is good GOOD LUCK. I have 27 as I animal rescue I pick them up when they are just a bone people think I will throw it off and it will find food that is no true. I am committed. I have the time and money to take care of these castaways who have been tossed to the curb after the fun is over especially larger dogs. Each cat or dog has its own personality it is sad that so many have to be put down they are mans best friend even when starved beaten and Michael Vicked dah!!!!!

yes, yes, thank you so much Katherine. And it's the honest to God truth when the article mentions that movies like Beverly Hills Chihuahua and idiots like Paris Hilton add to the over pet population. Look what happened when Disney's 101 Dalmations came out.

God Bless you Katherine.

Stop blaming movies and movie stars. We're all responsible for our own behavior. Anyone who goes and buys an animal because the watch a movie or see a famous person holding one is the idiot. People need to take personal responsibility and not get animals (and children for that matter) that they know nothing about and don't want to take the time to take care of properly.

So many celebs are talking about problems they have that should be better leftnot being aired in public, they use their money foolishly and extravagantly (which is their choice) but then you have others who do so much good. Good deeds make us happier people. Good for you, Katherine!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Having just played, fed ,watered and exercised12 dogs and of which 9 are puppies ,ty!! With only limited funds but plenty of time due to unemployment now we know how hard it is finding homes for rescued animals. We also have a dozen rescued kittens and cats. It's so hard to find stable.loving ,responsible owners!Dogs are not a fad!! They are so dependent on us to care for them and give them love!Cats too!We are at our limit now for helping because there aren't enough homes.I don't even have the money for our property taxes because my husband is layed off,I am disabled and our 19 yr old daughter lost her full time job and only has work 2 days a week now.It would be nice if all the people that abandoned ,neglected and abused these animals could help us out a little for taking care of their meaness.I hope the people that adopt these little dogs that have been saved are willing to make the commitment of providing love and care that is needed for them .And not just want them because it is fashionable!!

The best thing for these celebrities to do is to promote responsible pet ownership in a PSA., this is awesome what Kathryn did, but it is only a band aid approach, When the next cute animal movie or trend comes out(such as cloning) the whole cycle starts over again and they probably wont have a big name celebrity able to fit the bill to fly the animals out.

IT's a shame that people often treat animals as toys or throw aways, I am a teacher and just this week one of my students told me their dad found a box of kittens in the garbage. Luckily he took them home to find proper homes for them. Please spay and neuter, it is such a tragedy to have pet overpopulation. Thank you Kathryn for helping these dogs, I wish more people would be more responsible.
