Billy King is ready to buy his dog, Skip, a big bag of dog food after the dog barked to warn him of a fire on the other side of his duplex, reports KansasCity.com. The early warning was particularly important in this case because the Kansas man uses a wheelchair and had to call his son for help.

King tells KansasCity.com that he awoke to his dog's warning around 4:30 a.m. Firefighters and his son helped him out of his home, at which point the windows started to break from the heat of the fire.

Something tells us Skip is going to get more than a bit of extra dog food -- do they even make dog treats tasty enough to show this kind of appreciation?

Let's see if anyone can fill in the blank.......dog, a man's best ________. Any guesses? I am guessing this dog must have been trained by an organization to help the disabled, such as Canine Companions. This dog deserves a dog treat every day for the rest of his life. Job well done, Skip!!

A couple of months ago after I had recently purchased two parakeets, I decided to make myself a fire in my little woodburning stove and go back to bed and read and maybe take a little nap. Well I could not sleep because those parakeets I just bought, who had a birds-eye view of the fireplace, were screaming their little heads off. Finally I got up to look to see what they were screaming about, and found that my granddaughter had placed a plastic bucket of wood next to the fire place, setting the bucket on fire and melting the plastic, my speaker wire, etc. Thankfully I was able to put the fire out with water. Those birds saved my life.

Dogs don't have to be trained to do this, it is basic instinct for them. I had a dog years ago, that awoke me in the middle of the night, which she never had done in the past. Upon awakening, I could smell smoke and feel it in my throat. I woke my husband and we found out that the neighbor down stairs fell asleep with food cooking on the stove. Had it not been for my wonderful dog, we may have been overcome with smoke and possibly have died. She was instrumental in saving our lives more than once!

OMG! I can't believe that the media is still using the phrase "wheelchair bound". People who use a mobility device are not "bound" to it. Please learn some People First Language!!

VAN- i think you are the one who needs to be BOUND to something. you can not comment and make comments towards people where you know nothing of the subect. and it also makes your comments extremely less credible when you make glaring mistakes such as you did.

Van - Speak for yourself! I AM wheelchair BOUND! And have been almost 35 years! You're obviously one of those PC idiots whose ruining this country trying not to insult anybody...well guess what?! You just succeeded in doing so!!

This story is exactly why I've had nationally certified services dogs nearly 30 years....also to keep burglars/prowlers to a minimum.

Our dog ..A 3yr old female pitbull opened our living room window that was also locked with her mouth by biting down on the lip of the bottom ledge and lifting up ..the teeth marks are still there and dove thru it..this window is a small side window and she is 75 lbs..she barely fits..went thru the screen and all...to go alert a neighbor when we werent home that our live in grandfather was having a heart attack. She barked at their door and they followed her to our door and went in as they knew hospice had been coming everyday and that we were his caretakers....they saw the window and broken screen..Now thats amazing..She is such a lovable and well trained dog and lays by his side when we arent home..he calls her his Guardian Angel.

One night my dog started going ballistic. [I was 11 at the time] She barked and barked. Since I didn't hear anyone else getting up to shush the dog I walked in to the hallway and she was pacing back in forth from the door to me and back again barking frantically. As I came around a corner I noticed light from outside casting on the entry. The front door was open! I paused, then peeked around and my dog kept barking and growling - I watched as the silhouette of a man ran away and disappeared around the corner of my house! I slammed the door shut and pushed my couch against the door and screamed like crazy to wake everyone up! If the dog hadn't kept barking I don't know what would have happened!!
