The pet food was distributed in a total of 18 states (Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Alabama, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Florida), but all 21 accounts of thiamine deficiency were reported in New York and Pennsylvania.
All incidents were reported prior to October 19. However, if you've given this food to your cat, it's not a bad idea to be familiar with the signs of thiamine deficiency. The company's Web site states that cats deficient in the nutrient will exhibit neurological symptoms, such as "wobbly walking or muscle weakness, paralysis of the hindlimbs, seizures, ventroflexion (bending towards the floor) of the neck, and abnormal eye movement called nystagmus."
The issue has been rectified through numerous tests -- other Diamond foods do not have a problem -- but if you find that you have any bags with the codes below, you should return the recalled cat food for a full refund to the place where it was purchased, or call 800-977-8797.
Affected codes: RAF0501A22X 18lb., RAF0501A2X 6 lb., RAF0802B12X 18lb (BB30FEB11), RAH0501A22X 18 lb., RAH0501A2X 6lb. The dates of manufacture are May 28, 2009 and August 30, 2009.

I have had it with this company....my cats like the food ...but ...I am going to try others brands..........
Probably some MORE CRAP FROM CHINA!!! BUY AMERICAN (if you can find it!! *sob)
This company has had some major issues over the past few years. Their dog food was to blame for several pet deaths and now there's an issue with the cat food. I would be afraid to have my animals on this brand.
I never liked Diamond, they were involved with the big recall a couple of years ago. I home cook for one of my dogs for health reasons, but my other one eats Innova and will eventually switch to Evo when she gets old enough. I love (and will only feed) Natura Pet Foods because they have their own plant and the best ingredients of any pet food produced in the USA. Orijen is good from Canada... but they did have a problem with Salmon bones turning up in their food.
Dry catfood causes diabetes. Cats don't need carbs. They are carnivores. I saved my cat by reading "Your Cat" by Dr. Hodgkins, DVM
I feed my girl ONLY Fancy Feast Gourmet Gold. She won't eat any other food and there's NEVER been any problem with it.
I agree, I only feed my cats Fancy Feast which makes it expensive with 7 cats one weighing in at 24 pounds but I would rather pay for something I know won't make them sick or cause them problems. If you love your animals you don't buy cheap as you are asking for problems.
Um Linda, maybe you should think before you speak. Dry food does NOT cause diabetes. I have the best veterinarian in our county and as all others also tell you, a cat needs a balanced diet which includes BOTH dry AND wet food, some snacks and water.
If they recalled the food on September 23rd, how come we are only hearing about it now--over 2 months later?????
I have raised my 13 yr old Kitty on Wiskas dry food she is a Simese and never had any vet visits other than a spay years ago. I feed her special kitty food 1/2 can every other day. She only likes chicken or beef ground food. Its a shame that the FDA cannot get it right, they will when it hits their homes, unfortuntly.
I WAS OUTRAGED WHEN I FOUND OUT WHAT IS IN COMMERCIAL CAT FOOD. SLAUGHTER HOUSE LEFT OVERS ,DISEASES LUNGS KIDNEYS ,WHATEVER HUMANS CAN'T EAT AND THE FOOD IS NOT FDA. APPROVED BY THE GOVERNMENT ,IT DOES NOT HAVE TO BE. OUR PETS ARE LIKE FAMILY MEMBERS , AND THIS IS NOT FAIR. LISTEN TO ME CAREFULLY. FEED YOUR CAT RAW FOODS . GO ONLINE AND FIND RECIPIES FOR PETS.
I live with my parents now and mom has two adult cats 1 male/1 female. nothing special, just shelter cats. My daughter has a shelter cat, black domestic shorthair. I started feeding them Natures Variety - Instinct for Cats. WOW what a difference. completely grain-free, they have dry and canned. Nice variety of flavors. They have never been on a recall list. The food is considered 'raw' foods. something they NATURALLY would eat. Since they have started eating this, they are more active, their coats are beautiful, they're teeth and eyes, it's amazing what a premium food will do. I came across it while looking for a premium food for our new puppy. even the dog looks absolutely amazing. my brother said... omgawd, look how white his teeth are. and the vet is more than pleased. they have their own website, you should check it out.
Was the cat food lacking in thiamine all along since it began manufacturing this product in about 2006?
How long has this been going on? If it is a recent mistake, then it should have been caught by Quality Control, or in Manufacturing, or even the Material Procurement should have noticed when the usuage rate of thiamine had decreased, where were your controls people?
I guess you need to move your facility to China, so you can compete with their inability to produce safe products for our pets...good job...
I feed fancy feast and dry blue buffalo. I found blue buffalo after the last pet food recall. It was one of two foods recomended by my vet. Never had a problem with it and my cat is 10 years old. Hear coat is softer and shinier, litter box isn't as messy - which is a sign that your cat uses the food instead of leaving it for someone to clean up!!
i just read a recall posted on poisoned pet food. blue buffalo all spa select brand cat foods was listed. this site was posted 8-11-08 though. i just placed an order with them yesterday. i contacted them & haven't heard back yet. i just thought you should know.
I have two 15-yr. old cats and feed them Fancy Feast only.
I have eight cats and feed them Pro Plan dry food. It's a little expensive, but worth the price. Their bowel movements are so much smaller than other foods. It saves me from cleaning the litter box ten times a day.
ANOTHER CALL BACK ON BAD FOOD, THIS TIME FOR CAT'S. I SHOULD OF BEEN ON THE FRONT PAGE WHEN WE TURN THE COMPUTER ON. I DID NOT SEE IT ON THERE. AND YES THAT IS WERE IT SHOULD OF BEEN. SAW IT THERE YEARS AGO WHEN THEY CALLED BACK DOG FOOD. HOPE ALL YOUR CAT'S ARE DOING FINE.

I have 3 cat, just before Thanksgiving I bought some special kitty dry food ( original brand ) I left on vaction for just under two weeks came home and two of my cats were sick and the third has runny stools. Two of them what ever it was has all most ran it course if there is a course. One I had to take to the doc , the cost so far has been over 300.00. Still not sure what it is.
I changed the food ( no more special kitty ) a few days ago , The other two seem to getting better but I will wait and see. My third one is getting better with meds. He is a 14 year old cat ( my baby ) but I think the food caused the illness in all.
I was wondering has any one else noticed this with their cats
