The Cutest Dog Competition has come to an end as Dr. Papidies, the Chihuahua from Colorado, was crowned the winner to take home $1 million.

The prize is especially meaningful for the dog's owner, Dr. Leslie Capin. Several years ago, Papidies was diagnosed with Addison's Disease, an endrocine disorder which almost cost him his life.

Capin plans on using the cash prize to help other pets in need. She has said that she'll donate half a million dollars to the Dumb Friends League and half a million dollars to the Max Fund Animal Shelter "because thousands of pet owners have been forced to surrender their animals at shelters as they can't afford to care for them."

According to the Cutest Dog staff, "The decision was obviously very difficult for the judges. Each of the top 12 dogs was extremely cute and had a great back story, a loving family and many thousands of supportive fans."

Do you think they made the right decision? Leave us your thoughts in the comments below!

Two mistakes! 1) while all the final 4 were cute, in my opinion mozart outshown them the other three and no, I kown none of the dogs or their owners or own any y of those breeds, 2) and more importantly, the last vote count you showed had your winner in the last place by many, many votes (hundreds) and it's too late to post a final vote showing your dog winning, because since the announcement you can show any numbers you want and who can say you've cheated. This probably will be deleted and too bad because I love reading this site ordinarily.

hey coco -- the other post that shows dr. papidies in last place was a paw nation survey, where they asked readers whom they thought should win. however, paw nation was not the one holding the contest, it was a different site. paw nation is just reporting on the contest and the winner.

Why couldn't the doctor take care of himself?

Doctors make enough money. He'll probably just use the cash for a new yacht.

uh...did you READ the article....he/she is giving the money away to animal charities...

All dogs are cute, but this wouldn't have been my choice.

Instead of giving half a million to each of 2 shelters .. it would have been nice if she could have spread it around a little more .. perhaps giving $100,000 to TEN shelters.

So many shelters are being forced to put animals down due to overcrowding and lack of funds to care for so many animals.

Being a Coloradan who has adopted pets from both shelters over the years, I think Dr. Capin's gifts to the DDFL and MaxFund are beyond wonderful. They are both very deserving and I'm sure they're thrilled at the generosity of Dr. Capin.

The DDFL and MaxFund will take in ANY dog, cat or small animal, even if the animal is injured or sick (usually "no kill" shelters only take in animals with high adoption potential). We are blessed to have these three (DDFL has 2 facilities) shelters in Colorado!

I agree. The shelter where I live is overcrowded with 45 dogs and they kill them within one week if no one claims them. That is outragious.

I am certain that most dog owners think that their pet is the cutest, smartest, best looking of them all; however, the Doctor's plans for use of the money are not only most generous but well directed.

This is truly an intelligent and thoughtful gift to these two public agencies.

Congratulations to the winner.

I think they choose the right dog because the owner is giving back.I wonder what the others would have done with their money.

There is a problem that I see and that is when you get $1 million dollars you have to pay taxes which will be probably be about half of that. She will only have a half million dollars in the end to give to shelters so unfortunately those shelters will only get half of what she said unless she gives some out of her own money.

skye#20 skye11-30-2009 @ 1:00PM

I have 2 Chihuahuas who would have won hands down.. Also have one that looks very similar to the winner and although she is a sweetheart she looks more like a wolf and I have always felt she was not a good looking Chihuahua.
