Teller County Regional Animal Shelter
On a recent snowy Friday morning in Woodland Park, Colo., animal control received a call about a cat that may or may not have been alive under a deck. When they arrived they found the cat nearly frozen to death. According to shelter worker Sharon L. Peters, who told her story to USA Today, the black and white cat's eyes were closed and it wasn't moving. But when it let out the tiniest of squeaks, workers knew they had to do everything they could to save his life.
Over the next few hours, the workers warmed the cat up with heated towels and injected him with fluids to stop dehydration.
Their around-the-clock efforts were rewarded when the next morning the cat began moving around, wobbly at first, but visibly on the road to recovery.
By nightfall it was clear that the worst had passed, and that Icee (as he was named after his ordeal) was going to make it. He began purring affectionately and even eating a little bit.
Now the little black and white cat just needs to find himself a new home, but his battle to make it through -- and the shelter's successful efforts -- gave all the workers at the shelter something to be thankful for this holiday.

To "unthaw" means to freeze. The cat was thawed out. geeze!!
as a matter of fact thaw and unthaw mean the same thing, so you're wrong. way to look up a thing before you pass smug judgment on it. geeze!!
In fact, there is no proper word "unthaw". The word thaw is a verb. It means to raise the temperature of something to above its freezing point. "Un" is a prefix. It means the negative or opposite of ____. If you were to add this prefix to this word, it would mean to freeze. In proper formal writing, the word freeze would be the only word used.
Maybe it's one of those words that had to be added to the dictionary because so many people used it. Like the word "ain't". Remember, they used to say, "Ain't ain't a word." And some children got reprimanded for using "ain't". Some day we may see "conversate" be added to our dictionary. Shutter! I will always prefer to THAW.
URBAN DICTIONARY
DETHAW
A confusing conjunction of "defrost" and "thaw". Has a corresponding etymology to unthaw. Literally it means to refreeze, however, it has never actually been used correctly in conversation. Ever. In fact, it is always used to mean the opposite- a synonym for thaw. Just say thaw, not dethaw, not unthaw, just thaw.
*****************************************************************************************
UNTHAW
To freeze. Often used as a synonym for thaw or defreeze, although this is hideously incorrect. It actually means the opposite, when taken literally. Don't argue it. You are wrong.
Pete "The pizza was frozen so I let it unthaw for half an hour."
Willy "Get the f**k out of here you hick. And for the record, it's 'thaw'."
“Unthaw” is another illogical negative. Use “thaw.” I looked it up .
That is sooo sad... I just wish that I could have him... he seems so lonely!
-btw Rossie- they do- and thats kinda funny lol-
Define: unthaw - become or cause to become soft or liquid..it means they saved the kitty and yes ,instead of everyone picking on people how to spell and all that ect .Focus on the beauty of the article.
Gee, the poor little thing. I hope he winds up in a nice loving home.
Save this little baby....it will be the best thing you ever do.....give her a home and love her........
God bless this little boy and all animals who suffer. The topic was that this kitty lives, not the term "thaw" or "unthaw" being correct. Give this little guy, and all strays, a home
Don't miss the point. The volunteers very unselfishly gave of their time and expertise to help save the kitty. I have given my love and home to two kitties--one who showed up on my doorstep after the San Diego county Cedar fire in a very emaciated and frightened state--and the other I adopted from a shelter. God Bless all the generous people who treat animals with kindness and love.
You said it exactly the way I was thinking.
i think its wonderful. unthaw and thaw are two diff meanings. i went to school ow about you? what matters here is they cat lived and thats awesome
I'm sure he'll find a good home. After all, he's a celebrity! lol It looks like a very personable one as well. Those workers went above and beyond as I well know, having rescued animals myself.
List managers, PLEASE get this "yinweiwoaini10" off of here. This person has posted under a series of false information (read their history) , and this is definitely a spam on your site. This is disgusting and I think this company should be reported for stooping to this sort of thievery. I am sure they are about as "young, beautiful and lonely as I am" and trust me, I am NONE of the above.
They say humans can live after an ordeal like Icee went through. I am glad they took the time and dedication to save that cutie.
No passing judgements here for sure. However, it is thaw. I could not find "un"thaw in the dictionary. I do believe we have "Americanized" unthaw?
junbg, I looked it up too (albeit briefly) & what I found seems to indicate that unthaw is more related to changing FROZEN solids to liquid & thaw is changing ANY solid to a liquid. Which technically means neither is correct in this case as the cat is definitely not in a liquid state! Maybe "gradually warmed" would be the correct terminology. At any rate, it's all nonsense, the important thing is that the cat was saved & that the workers ( & the person that called it in) went out of their way to do so. I hope Icee finds a wonderful home & I'm glad this story got shared with us!
god bless all lthe little animals that are lost and alone and bless the people who saved this little kitty. iam sure he will find a loving home now, as god will see to it.
Animal Shelter Worker: I "thaw-t" I "thaw: a putty tat!!
Okay... that was sorta funny. Hope you meant it in a nice way! ;-)
