Ivan Banovic, a Croatian soccer goalie, took a break from protecting his goal to protect a cat who had wandered onto the field at the beginning of a game, reports NPR. After Banovic quickly carried the curious cat to a safe spot under the scoreboard, a referee called a penalty on the goalkeeper for the violation of leaving the field mid-game.

The referee who made the decision was immediately booed, and BBC Sport reports that the crowd -- including the opposing team's fans -- spent the remainder of the game applauding the penalized goalie for his kindness.

We'd say the kitty is a fan for life!

Kudos to him for having a heart and acting on it despite the consequences!

It's a no-win situation for both men. The referee is bound to enforce the rules. The goalie is an honourable man who follows his conscience.

If the ref had been a decent human being, he might have called a time out while the field was cleared. Kudos to the player for being kind--and to the crowd who told the ref just what they thought of his call.

This is truely one of those "darned" if you do and "darned" if ya don't moments. You have to admire both sides for their decisions.

Time out? Wrong game.

Ah, see, the ref is in fact omnipotent...if he decides to penalize you because Texas is, in fact, a mushroom, don't even bother pointing out that texas isn't a mushroom because he'll insist it is and yellow card you. He could have stopped all play instantly if he wanted to, and he could have completely ignored the guy leaving the field especially if the action wasn't in the Croatian defensive third of the field.

have to look at it THIS way too, maybe the ref is a serial killer, don't they start off killing animals??? He did not show compassion for the poor kitty, better keep an EYE on this one!

Here we go again, people do the right thing and get penalized for it. Kudos to the hockey player for doing the right thing. God bless him. Remember people, in the way the world is today it is so easy to look the other way and not get involved because of the backlash which may follow. But remember this, God will remember all your good deeds!

How a hidden aspect hides in plain sight. The cat was also a safety hazard to everyone on the field as well. an immediate time out would have been more proper. Kudos to the kind hearted player. The ref should re-think the penalty considering the safety issue on behalf of the players.

Again... time out?

mel#13 mel11-27-2009 @ 5:15PM

Keeper, people. In soccer it's a goal keeper. Hockey has goalies.

SuzK#14 SuzK11-28-2009 @ 1:01AM

Actually Mel, both are goalies. In hockey it's goaltender and, as you said, in soccer it's goalkeeper :-)

Bob#15 Bob11-27-2009 @ 6:23PM

This is the kind of thing that puts the goalie in the "hero" class.

I am a dog lover, but hate to admit that I cannot stand cats, hate to be in a house with one and if it rubs against me I want to kick it out the door. Don't know why they have that effect on me.One reason may be that they are natural born killers, if its something that they can kill , they will kill it.

poot#19 poot11-27-2009 @ 6:40PM

Yeah, and dogs aren't killers...? Time to rethink your excuse.

Debbie#20 Debbie11-27-2009 @ 9:03PM

Dan, most animals have the instinct to chase after anything that runs from them, whether it be cats or ahem, dogs. I've had more dogs kill things than I've had cats...in fact, most of the cats I've ever had won't kill other animals, even though they will chase and catch. One of my dogs, on the other hand, would hunt birds, moles, and anything else in sight, laying their dead carcasses at my back door as presents. Sooo, sounds like a flimsy excuse for not liking cats...perhaps you had some kind of childhood trauma or some other experience that turned you against them. Always remember the "Reverence for Life" that Albert Schweitzer had...all creatures should be treated with respect.
