Jarrel Wade/Tulsa World

A traffic accident in Tulsa, Okla. Monday night led to a stray puppy finding a new, happy home -- after a bizarre twist of events involving an ice chest.

When Tulsa police officer Jacob Johnston arrived on the scene of the accident, a strange sound caught his attention. Whimpering seemed to be coming from a cooler on the side the road. An abandoned puppy was inside the cooler, the Tulsa World reported, although there's no word on whether the ice chest actually came from one of the cars involved in the accident.

The pup's luck took an instant turn for the better when another first responder, firefighter David Merrill, said he'd take the puppy home to his three kids (and one other dog) as an early Christmas present.

Merrill told reporters he's already picked out a name for the pooch: Lucky.

I just love a happy ending. Thank you for taking the puppy home and not to a shelter.

Hi,
I work at one of the best shelters in the country. Most are good places to take an animal to help it find a new home. They usually have many visitors and are able to tell more people about the animals in their care than if someone starts floating emails around while they wait to find an adopter. Shelters will also spay/neuter the animal and give it shots, usually for one low fee.

I hope the firefighter gets his puppy neutered. Pet overpopulation can be stopped if each of us pet owners is a responsible owner.

Unfortunately it wasn't a happy ending for everyone. I live in Tulsa, and our local news gave us more details. The accident involved only a motor cyclist who, it seems, hit a boulder that was in the middle of the road. The driver of that motor cycle was pronounced dead. Police don't believe that the puppy in the cooler belonged to the driver, but rather that the puppy was abandoned earlier that evening. I hope that the driver's family finds comfort in the fact that his death saved this lucky puppy's life.

I'm very sorry that a man lost his life, but as far as someone putting a puppy in a cooler and just walking away, I'd like to know who would do such an abusive thing!! In the Arizona sun, that puppy was VERY LUCKY to still be alive!! Thank you Mr. fireman, for having such a kind and decent heart!!!!

I don't understand how a person could be so cruel to an animal. They have to be sickos and should be put to sleep.

at least this story has a better ending to it than the one about that idiot who kicked that puppy to death because he missed the damn beginning of a football game !

This puppy was in deed a very lucky puppy. How horrible that it took some one dieing at the scene of an accident for him to be found. My prayers go out for the people involved in the accident and their families. At least the rescue people were at the right place at the righ time for this lucky little puppy. No one should do something like that to any animal; shelters will take them in if you can't find a home for them yourself.

This is a very lucky puppy. I don't know what the weather is right now in Tulsa but I image the person who did this thought this was a way to protect the puppy from the cold and keep the puppy from wandering out into traffic and that someone would check what was in the cooler sooner then later. Thank God it was sooner. Unfortunately people think in these terms all the time. For instance someone who releases a domesticated gerbil or rabbit into the wild thinking the animal will fine when in fact giving it a horrible death sentence. IF YOU CAN NO LONGER TAKE CARE OF A PET PLEASE TAKE IT TO A SHELTER.
