Name: Boxer

Personality: Due to the breed's pugilistic build and name, boxers are sometimes misrepresented as being aggressive, quick-tempered and headstrong. But the truth is that with proper obedience training, the boxer is one of the most loving, faithful, friendly, and quick-witted breeds out there. Some experts have ranked the boxer's intelligence as middling compared to other breeds, but Boxer owners often contest this finding based on personal experience.

Grooming: Boxers are known for being one of the cleanest dogs around. In fact, like cats, they are largely self-grooming! And frequent bathing might actually be detrimental to a boxer's coat, as it can lead to dry-skin conditions. Its short, smooth fur sheds little. Docking a boxer's tail and cropping its ears were common surgical procedures in the past to lessen the chances of infections, but today such unnecessary surgeries are not practiced as often.

Common Health Issues
: "Boxer Cardiomyopathy" is an inflammation of the heart muscles and, as its nickname suggests, occurs most often in this breed. Other conditions and diseases that show up in boxers -- cancers, epilepsy, hip dysplasia, degenerative myelopathy -- do so with about the same likelihood, or even a slightly less likelihood, as they do in other breeds. A well-bred boxer that is fed and exercised properly has a good chance of living healthfully to a ripe, old age.
