The new professorship, named for Barker's late wife Dorothy Jo Barker, went to Patricia McEachern, who will work to develop the nation's first undergraduate program in animal rights. McEachern told Paw Nation, "The student interest in the Animal Ethics class has been outstanding. The course filled up almost immediately and we started a waiting list. The goal of the Animal Ethics course is to make students aware of issues regarding animals." Her long-term goals include establishing a minor. She added, "If you spend any time at all with Bob Barker, he is going to make you laugh. I hesitate to share a specific story because I could never do him justice. Bob Barker is an American treasure."

I noticed that in a report, on Paw Nation, about all the wonderful things you are doing that it was noted that Southerns had a very high rate of not fixing their critters. I would like to explain that. In my home town it costs $85.00 for the 2 seconds to neuter a cat; $158.00 to spay a female cat. Dogs are considered by size as to how much one will pay for these services, so you know that's a great deal over the options for cats. Folks here take good care of their critters, but even when a discount spay/neuter is offered the price is usually only reduced by about $10.00. This so discouraging. And our town is so closed off in some ways that none of the vets will really go very far at reducing prices. We do not have an ASPCA. When I lived in Los Angeles, they were doing spays and neuters for really low prices. It was a wonderful thing.
