Oreo the pit bull mix Dog pictureASPCA

Oreo, a one-year-old pit-bull mix who this past summer survived being thrown from a New York City rooftop, has been euthanized. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) released a somber statement that Oreo was put down on Friday, November 13.

"It was a difficult decision to make, and one that was based on the welfare of Oreo," Dr. Stephen Zawistowski, the ASPCA's National Programs and Science Advisor, tells Paw Nation.

The abuse that Oreo suffered in her short life, it seems, was insurmountable. On June 18, Oreo was beaten by her owner, 19-year-old Fabian Henderson, who threw her from a six-story building, as reported in the New York Daily News. "Neighbors reported hearing the sounds of the dog being beaten for at least 20-30 minutes -- and the dog whimpering as a consequence," the ASPCA said in its statement.

Oreo miraculously survived the brutal plunge, suffering "multiple fractures in her front legs as well as ligament damage, bruised lungs, a fractured rib, liver injury and internal bleeding," reported the New York Times. The skin around Oreo's stomach and armpits was also infected, said the New York Post, suggesting additional abuse. (Henderson was arrested and ultimately pleaded guilty to felony animal-abuse charges, and will be sentenced on December 1, according to the New York Times.)

At the ASPCA, Oreo recovered from her physical injuries, only to "begin showing signs of extreme aggression -- with little provocation or warning," says the ASPCA. "We did a lot of work trying to desensitize her to a variety of stimuli as well as being used to handled by, and being in the presence of, people," says Dr. Zawistowski. "She became very reactive when presented with a variety of stimuli common in foster care or sanctuary situations: the presence of other dogs, people and needing to be touched to provide basic care." An ASPCA video provided to Paw Nation shows Oreo barking and lunging at passing dogs, turning to snap at her handler and baring her teeth and snarling at the camera.

"When we make these decisions, it's not based on a single evaluation or incident. It's based on looking at the trajectory of how the dog has been doing while in our care and during our rehabilitative processes," says Dr. Zawistowski. Oreo, he says, was so reactive that it "results in her being constantly aroused in a non-positive way, that over time becomes more and more deteriorating for her physical and psychological capacity."

"We have done everything humanly possible to save Oreo's life," Ed Sayres, President and CEO of the ASCPA, said in a statement. "Yet as a result of the abuse she suffered at the hands of Mr. Henderson, or for other reasons we may never know, she has come to a place where she can no longer be around people or other animals. We make this decision, and others like it, with a heavy heart and a complete understanding that, had she been treated with love and respect, Oreo's fate would be much different."

On Friday afternoon, Dr. Zawistowski described the procedure that awaited Oreo. "[The ASPCA] will use the same methods that any veterinarian would use for a beloved family companion," he explains. "It is absolutely not painful," he says. "We desire that her last moments will be calm moments with a kind hand touching her."

The sad thing is that Oreo did not have to die. Pets Alive offered to take her. They have great success with aggression problems and rehabilitated dogs just like Oreo.

This is the same ASPCA that claimed the Michael Vick dogs should be killed, according to them they were beyond being rehabilitated. I guess Best Friends and the other organization that took in the Vick’s dogs proved them wrong.

I guess there are more worried about losing face then saving the animals.

SHAME ON YOU!!!!!

Rest in peace Oreo, sorry we let you down.

poor oreo. hopefully this will inspire people to report animal abuse!

Too bad Oreo couldn't have been saved and rehabilitated. Why not take the owner (who should not own pets) and beat him and throw him off a 6 story building. See if he survives.

Suji#4 Suji11-17-2009 @ 1:48PM

Absolutely agree Geoff, let's see if the owner would survive that kind of abuse. Rest in peace, Oreo.

I am with you!!!! Stories like this make me sick!!! There needs to be stiffer penalties for people that abuse animals. They should suffer the same way they caused suffering!!!! That is why I hate people.

Ditto. Once I stopped crying long enuff to write this.....I came up with a better idea, give me 20-30 mins alone with the a**hole who owned Oreo, I guarantee you, he will not survive.

Amen!! I would love to see this guy beaten and thrown off the same roof. This poor beautiful dog should be running and playing right now. Well I guess he is, in heaven. Playing with all of our beloved pets we have lost. RIP Oreo!

I cannot agree with you more Geoff. He should be beaten thrown off a roof and then put in jail for the rest of his life to suffer with no medical help. What also makes me sick is that if people heard this dog being beaten why didn`t they do something about it instead of sitting on their butts doing nothing? It`s called calling the police!

Fabian Henderson is not a human he is more like a malignant tumor that needs to be exterminated.

I love all animals and this is just such a needless and sad story.
I hope that the book is thrown at this creep who owned this poor dog.
There's got to be a special place in HELL for creeps who abuse, fight,
kill and exploit animals for their sick, demented, greedy inhumane egos.
Don't get me wrong I love people too but not evil, cold hearted, abusive,
egotistical morons...

it is sad to see this poor dog suffered inthe way he did. the
"owner" for lack of a better word who abused him deserves to be treated in the same manner. Unfortunately, with pit bulls once they begin showing signs of aggression, they cannot be rehabilitated. I cannot understand the popularity of pit bulls anyway, these are dogs who have very mercurial moods, are used more than any other dog in fighting, and the favorite dog of drug dealers and gangbangers.why would anyone want a breed of dog that is known for mostly for the number of attacks on humans rather than its loyalty and happiness.

This is a sad story. How could anyone do this to man's best friend. They say that dogs are not bad, it is the owner's, well as we see how true this one is. I hope he gets locked up.People in jail do not take to animal abuser's or child abuser's. You don't want the dog, take it to the shelter. Not all pit bull's are bad, my son has one and it is a couch potato, very sweet and great with kids. My girlfriend has two and they are so sweet, so not all are nastey.

I understand why they had to euthanize her. Because of the pain inflicted on her, Oreo would have never been able to have a full and enjoyable life.

That absolutely disgusts me. And what's even scarier is that serial killers and especially gruesome murderers start with crimes like this, hurting and killing pets and animals.

Rest in peace Oreo. And Mr. Henderson, you will get what's coming to you.
