Sabi was with an Australian-Afghan army patrol when they were ambushed in the Uruzgan province in September 2008. The ensuing gunfight wounded nine soldiers, including Sabi's handler, and Sabi went missing. Soldiers searched for the dog for months, but she was gone without a trace and declared Missing in Action.
Officials from Australia's Department of Defence said Thursday that a U.S. soldier at an isolated patrol base elsewhere in the province recently found Sabi. According to newspaper The Australian, officials would identify the man who discovered Sabi only as a soldier named John who was aware that the Aussie special forces were missing one of their detection dogs.
Military spokesman Brig. Brian Dawson said that because of Sabi's good condition, it appeared that someone had been looking after her for more than a year.
Sabi returned back to base with a hero's welcome. According to The Australian, Sabi's Special Forces trainer claimed that after only a few hours back she was already adhering to orders and chasing tennis balls.

this is a touching story,
and Sabi looks exactly like my lab/border collie mix Max.
the only difference is Max has white on his feet.
dogs are the greatest animals,I am so pleased they found her.
now if I could just get her together with my Max,
what a great litter of pups they could have.
The world doesn't need anymore pups! What we need to to adopt and get dogs and cats out of the shelters! DON'T BUY, ADOPT!!!!!
It is a great story though! God bless you SABI
Animals are killed every day in the pound, only an idiot would let their dog have puppies in this economy where dogs and cats are turned in to animal control, a hundred a day in some areas........think about it!
Thank you Lisa for doing the right thing by Max. I volunteered at a shelter for six months and it was heartbreaking to see all the homeless animals. Along with older dogs big black ones are the hardest to adopt out.
This is a beautiful story. I love to read about animals reuniting with their owners. We must spay/neuter all animals in our household. There are wonderful pets at the thousands of shelters and adoption centers. Some are even pedigrees. These pets need a forever family to love them, feed them, give them yearly vet checks. They return so much and ask for very little. They have feelings, too.
I agree with you Mary and Lisa,
Max is 3 years old now and we just got a new puppy from an unexpected litter that a friends dog had.
I know what you are saying about adopting pets.
I love my animals and would not want to see one of these creatures without a home and family.
chill out Lisa,
I am getting Max neutered so there wont be any pups for him.
I was just saying that they would make some awesome puppys.
BTW, Max is a rescued dog,he was 14 weeks old wondering around alone and we took him in before he got sent to the shelter.
It's really cool that the dog was found and returned to it's rightful owner!
Labs are not only the most popular breed, they're the smartest. Yes, I am a Lab lover! Nice story.
Your right Labs are the smartest
Really... then you haven't met my Chihuahua/Jack Russel mix Roxie who learned down, sit, and stay within 10 minutes and how to jump 18 feet on command in 10 minutes.
I just lost my pound puppy after 8 years. I was skeptical of getting a dog from the shelter but now I can tell you I would not hesitate. It always made me feel good when I saw her happy and she sure made me smile and added so much to my life. If you are holding back, don't! Spend some time at a shelter and get to know the animal you are thinking about. You will be glad you did. I still have a dog, a cat, and 5 birds, We have a barking, meowing, squawking good time. What a life.
My lab is 94 yrs. old in dogs life. Everyday... she has to have her Captain Crunch cereal in the am. She loves to take a walk when I come home from work and loves people. I have taken her to my guard job on occassion. (I have worked in some really desolate sites) and as a woman.... just having her in my vehicle while on duty in a very desolate place.. makes me feel secure. Even if she's snoring in the back seat. Kids love her, mean people love her and every dog that she has encountered while on our walks just takes to her. She's so mellow. I wish the humans that I have contact with on a daily basis had her temperment. She's awesome and I would miss her deeply if she passed away. I know the time is coming but.. for now... she's truly a gift from God.
You will never find a more trusting and loyal friend then a dog. They never ask you why. They are just there for you everyday of their life's. They love you unconditionally. All they want is to be by your side and provide you with companionship. Humans should have these qualities.
Beautiful story. I enjoy hearing animal stories with the soldiers as they are protecting our country.
It is a heart lifting story and was glad to hear that Sabi is in good condition and all. My only concern now is whether Sabi has been brainwashed after 14 months with the enemy and will become a suicide dog?
ADOPT ADOPT< THATS THE WAY TO GO

Best dogs in the world. I also have a lab / border collie mix and wouldn't give her up for the world. Most loyal dog I have ever had. Much more loyal than any human ever would be.
THATS A GOOD WITTLE DOGGYYYYYYY !
