The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), an international nonprofit environmental organization, considers carbaryl "highly toxic", and has pushed the federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to get Wellmark International to discontinue using carbaryl in its pet flea collars, reports the Portland Pet Health Examiner.
While that may seem like good news, the NRDC published a startling and groundbreaking report in April 2009 that two pesticides -- tetrachlorvinphos and propoxur -- are still being used in flea collars, posing a significant danger to children, adults and animals. "High levels of pesticide residue can remain on a dog's or cat's fur for weeks after a flea collar is put on an animal," the NRDC report states. "Some residue levels are so high that they pose a risk of cancer and damage to the neurological system of children up to 1,000 times higher than the EPA's acceptable levels."
And that's not all. "Children are particularly at risk from these pesticides because their neurological and metabolic systems are still developing," the report further states. "They are also more likely than adults to put their hands in their mouths after petting an animal, and so are more likely to ingest the hazardous residues."
The NRDC is urging the EPA to ban the use of tetrachlorvinphos and propoxur in pet products. In the meanwhile, the organization suggests more natural methods of flea control, such as bathing your pet, combing its fur to find fleas, regular vaccuming and keeping grass and shrubbery clipped. The NRDC also recommends the use of pet products with Insect Growth Regulators (IGRs) found in sprays, spot applications, collars and pills. For more information, visit www.greenpaws.org.

Parlsey, garlic powder, lemon grass oil have been good things for mosquitos. There is an all nature product called Natural Defense you can buy at Petsmart that I have used all summer and have not seen any fleas or ticks on my Lab.
artice says "As of September 2010, one toxin currently being used in flea collars will be discontinued"....um its only 2009!
You can use parsley, garlic powder, lemon grass oil, there are alot of things natural to use. There is a natrual product called Natural Defense you can get at Petsmart. I have used it all summer and have not seen any fleas or ticks.
Please be careful when using garlic or any of the lily family on dogs, especially anything containing onion. These are toxic to dogs and can cause serious problems.
Peace,
Robbie

Fennel in the kennel keeps the fleas away. High freq insect repellers also help - if they don't bug your dog/cat.
Insecticides and pesticides kill - as in homicide, suicide and fratricide, hello.Take the military chemical weapons school as I did and see how lethal these killers are - same class of chemicals. I no longer use any of the killers.
flea collars are useless
My dogs do not have fleas! My neighbors don't believe it, my Vet confirms that they do not have fleas. We don't treat the yard/grass for fleas. When we camp they do get ticks, if I don't spray insect repellent on them, but I know how to get those things off of them. I think my dogs and the cat are flea free, because of the scraps of meat we give them. I always use garlic in my meat cooking. That is the only thing I can think of. Since the Chinese poisoned dog food scare, I have been making my dogs food. I do put a little garlic in it for flavor. So, the flea free continues.
My dog food has evolved to the easiest way of producing it. I am not recommending any recipe. I told my Vet what it consisted of and she didn't tell me not to do it. In crock pot, 1.5 # ground sirloin or chuck frozen, 6 carrots (I cut off each end), 6 shakes worscheshire sauce, salt, tsp of powdered garlic, water to within 2.5" from top. Let cook on high until cut up carrots are soft, chop meat to make smaller pieces (after it has cooked), add 2 cups long grain white rice, 1 cup oats (old fashion), 0.5 Cup corn meal, and I put 5 calcium tab, that have been dissolved in water and stir. I stir a couple more times before it finishes. Always put the lid back on the crock pot. Another thing I do is use the same ingredients and add eggs and make meat loaves. While cooking, the dogs are loving me soooo much. They used to be fat on commercial food, now they are down to a safe weight, I should go on their diet, lol. They always have bones too, for cleaner teeth and strong bones from the calcium they scrap off the bone.
It's being discontinued in flea collars but will still be used on the nation's agricultural crops............?????????!!!!!!!!!!!

As Robbie 11-04-2009 @ 5:08PM says,

Also Onion is toxic to CATS! Becareful when your pets cannot keep food down and the vet recommends broth - that the broth you buy does not contain onion in it!!!!! I was going to purchase the best brand name for my cat and thankfully I remmembered the onion and checked the ingredients, out of all the brands only one did not contain onion- it was the Wal-Mart brand and the cheapest!
I have given my dogs garlic in their raw, organic food for years...NEVER EVER had fleas, tics or health problems of any kind....garlic isn't toxic to dogs unless you give them a ton of it.
I am a Pet Groomer and THE BEST way to get rid of fleas is to bathe your dog using dishwashing liquid such as Dawn.Leave on the dishwashing liquid on them NO more than 10 mins. and rinse off completely. This is what is sometimes used in grooming shops.
My dog is an indoor dog and only goes out for potty purposes. He is bathed once a week and has never had fleas. He goes for car rides to the office, walks on a leash nad get checked regularly at the vet for fleas or worms and has always had a clean bill of health.
It all starts in the home!
I have not used those collars in years. but did not no about the seven in it. I use frontline and a womring pill every month. I never give my dogs human food, just dog food and dog treats. There is a list of human food also but would talk all day to type that out.The house hold products can kill them and flower's. There is so much that can harm our pets such as bones, and xmas time, holiday plants, christmas rose, holly lilies, and mistletoe are toxic. Ribbons, decoration's may contain methylene chloride, fire salts, angel hair, xmas tree water, decoration hooks cause blockage, styrofoam makes them choke, and tinfoil, ballons and confetti pets choke or obstruct their intestines, that is for the holiday spirit. Did not mean to keep going but thought it was helpful you guys.one of my guys gets into everything normally brings it to me, bu have nothing laying around, have to watch him 24-7 when he is bored.
WHEN EVER UNSURE, I HAVE DONE IT MYSELF, CALL THE POISION CONTROL IN YOUR CITY IF YOU CAN NOT REACH YOUR VET. I LOVE MY DOGS AS WE ALL DO. SORRY ABOUT THE TYPO'S, I WAS GOING TO FAST. BEST OF LUCK TO ALL OF USE AND THERE IS A SITE BUT DO NOT HAVE IT RIGHT NOW AND WOULD HAVE TO LOOK IT UP.
#4 IS RIGHT THERE IS ALOT OF NATURAL THINGS TO USE. THEY ARE LIKE KIDS, INTO EVERYTHING WHEN THEY ARE YOUNG. THANKS GUYS.
I just got over having the worst allergic reaction to dog flea collars. The first go-around caused the skin around my eyes to redden and burn. When I figured out it was the flea collars I was allergic to, we removed the and washed our sheets. (we have small dogs who are on the bed and furniture) However, we didn't bathe the dogs, we just removed the collars. I had a relapse, and this time my eyes were almost swollen shut. We bathed the dogs, washed all blankets, and I went to the doctor. After taking allergy pills, and using an antibiotic cream, the skin around my eyes peeled like I had a sunburn. Never again will collars be allowed in our home.
LYNN ARE YOU ALRIGHT IS THE MED HELPING YOU. ARE THE DOG OR DOG OK. IS NOT GIVE HIM BENADRAL IF HE IS HAVING A REACTION.
LOVE K.C JUST CONCEREND TYPO, I AM TIRED SORRY
I'm ok now! The dogs never had a reaction to the collars...only me. The burning, itching and swelling is gone now that the flea collars are banned from our house. Thanks!
