According to the Associated Press, a woman in Athens, Georgia reportedly scared away an intruder from her home late Saturday night with some canid improv. Her antics included "scratching at the door and acting like a large dog," the AP reported.
Whether or not the woman actually did arf-arf her way to safety is unknown; the police report of the incident didn't specify barking as one of her tactics.

I use real dogs - six of them. Of course, only three actually bark, but I would not risk trying to come in without an invitation. One of the three weighs 110 lbs. and another is only about 55 lbs., but they both have ugly growls and large, shiny fangs. They are mine, but I would never get into an argument with them. By the time an alarm company calls to see if there is a real problem and then calls law enforcement here, 45 minutes have passed and it would be too late for anything more than processing the crime scene.
Works for me too. I have five one a newfie and my smallest hitting 45lbs.
You are so right. My daughters alarm went off and they have to this day not called her. That was 9 years ago.She called the next day and canceled. They tried to say something about her contract, but she told them she would go to every one in her neighborhood who had their sign and tell them,so they let her cancel. Also 911 is the same way,My husband had a heart attack and I called 911 then called my daughter, who was in another town. She got to our home 15 min. before the ambulance. The next one he had,I got him in my car and got him to the hospital,in 5 min. They were so mad at me,asking me what I would have done if he had another,I said I am certified in CPR and I know how to pull off the side of the road.If I had waited for 911 he would have died.
Sennen - YES! Dogs are great to have in a home for SO many
reasons, alerting you by barking is just one talent. Also a dog could
satisfy both sides of the debate over use of force-guns-etc...
(Liberal or Conservatives are all welcomed to adopt a shelter dog!!!)
1) Homeowners who are against using force (guns etc) would use
the bark alert to start a cup of coffee to share with the intruder so
that they could analyze the criminals childhood and determine why
they feel the need to commit robbery and/or murder, possibly sharing a Pop Tart also...
2) Homeowners who believe in owning guns and are not opposed to
using them to protect their own would have been alerted to load up
and be ready for action they feel is appropriate...
Either way works for me, a volunteer at our local animal shelter,
possibly helping to adopt more wonderful dogs to homes that
would value them. Please help stop the euthanasia-SPAY/NEUTER!
They will eat you in your sleep.
2 Rotties one is 149lbs the other 98lbs 1 Ruger k-95 w/ 11 Hollowpoints
and 1 sign that sez if you are comitting a crime dial 911 so they may attempt to revive you
I use the sound of my shotgun racking. then i know i have something to protect me if the burglar is more determined. acting like a dog works the same way yelling "WHO IS IT?" does, it only stops those who are concerned about getting caught.
A dog is a good "alert" for the homeowner that a predator is at their door. Eight or nine rounds from a .40 cal Glock once they break in is a guarantee against recidivism.
That Glock idea is a great deterent and it has been proved that counties that have a large percentage of gun ownership do have less crime, however, at some time in the near future the imbeciles in Washington will legislate to the point where YOU will be the criminal for trying to protect yourself, your family, your possessions, and your last bastion of safety, which is what most people would like to consider their home. You never hear about how many people have saved their own lives or protected their families because they have a gun. What the media does relish ramming down our throats are the stories of kids getting hold of a family gun and shooting up schools. Those kids would have thought of another way of killing people if a gun hadn't been handy. It isn't the gun that makes people bad, it is only a handier tool.
Very well said...I like your style!!!
You are sooooooo right!
I agree 100%.
My Australian Cattle Dog who sleeps in the house--barks and very protective. He will warn me on time to get my Sig Sauer 5.56MM---it shoots 30 rounds before reloading------think what would happen to the intruder/home invader.
I'll bet she got her training from Uga, the Georgia mascot. "Hunker down, you hairy dog!"
I think real dogs are a much better deterant. If someone breaks into my house I want them chewed to shreds. I don't want them to just change their mind (for the moment).
I want the dog to notice any prowlers & make a lot of noise & a distraction so I can get ready to shoot them.
That's what I call a good home security system,...but we have a security system to, ...but that's very noisy & not nearly as much fun. A dog attacking an intruder, & making sure I have the opportunity to maim, scar, disfigure, & hopefully render him/her/them completely disabled for the rest of their lives.
Now, THAT'S what I call Justice.
Oh, yah,....and then I would call 911,...you know whenever I can find my cell phone & charge it up, & remember what the phone number is for 911,....& gee, I hope I can remember my correct current address.
Would that be wrong??
I have three shepherds that watch my home....I never worry when I sleep!
I have guns, my wife and kids have them. I hunt so we all know how to use them and we all know the safety of using or storing them, i like to keep them out of sight and reach from our grandkids. If the owners of guns would teach more gun safety and the Govt. would require each homeowner to possess a firearm the crimerate would go down, come on who would breakin, or try to carjack or mug knowing you had a glock. People kill people, not the gun. Are they going to ban knives, cars, bats, airplanes, or just about anything that can be used to kill. Love thy neighbor and shoot thy enemy!
what an awesome post...i learned how to shoot a gun at 6 yrs old and the respect has always been there since...wish more people thought like you
Well, that's all fine and dandy, but I'm thinking that most intruders have guns and would have no qualms about using them on vicious dogs. So much for your beloved guard dog... or dog impersonator! Also, I would be willing to bet that more innocent people than intruders are mauled by dogs, since dogs don't know the difference and most haven't been trained, or trained correctly.
But, that's not the point of the article--- "innocent" people don't break into your house.
