Jeanne Noonan, New York Daily News

Eli the chihuahua, a celebrated doggy model, caused a commotion when he dressed up as Pope Benedict XVI for this year's Times Square Dog Day Masquerade event in New York City.

Photographers clamored to photograph the tiny Chihuahua wearing a splendid red-and-gold robe and mirtre. "People reacted so strongly to his costume," Eli's owner, Karen Biehl, told Paw Nation. "They loved it. He was photographed all day long."

Was anyone offended by Eli's costume? "Not one person had a problem with it," Biehl said. "In fact, the people that seemed to like it the most were people who were Catholic."

Biehl's inspiration for the doggy pope outfit came from a large gold cross she had purchased earlier in the year. "I thought, 'Eli would make a really good pope!'" Biehl said. "Eli's really good at wearing hats and he tends to look regal, so I thought that he would be perfect for the costume." Biehl sent photographs of the real pope to her friend and doggy fashion designer, Roberto Negrin, who made the costume for Eli.

Believe it or not, Biehl has another costume planned for the many Halloween events that she and Eli will be attending this year. "I'm going to dress him up as Michael Jackson," Biehl said. "Roberto made the jacket, and I made a silver glove and a Michael Jackson wig." Now that we gotta see.

Tell us, will you be dressing up your pets this Halloween season?

Although this looks cute and funny, this dog-in-a Pope costume is essentially in bad taste and irreverent. The Cross, especially, is considered a very holy and sacred symbol. This is offensive to many Christians. Nor should a dog be dressed for Halloween as a rabbi or any other religious figure....

Whatever happened to imitation being the greatest form of flattery?

Pets shouldn't be dressed up at all. How annoying to most of them, & us. Folks, take the money you spend on costumes & gourmet dog treats & put it toward human beings who need help. This pet industry is getting way out of hand.

Alice, that is called "idolatry" when you ascribe sanctity to an object or symbol. Remember the "Golden Calf?" Pissed off Moses pretty good, didn't it? Christianity is so much more than a cross.

So that whole christian thing about forgiveness and redemption doesn't apply here? I suspect Jesus and God are a good deal more tolerant than "christians"...I'm just sayin'...

Alice I think the Pope will think this little Chihuahua is quite cute and very regal looking. I really don't believe he will find it offensive at all. Did you ever spell dog backwards? It spells GOD and dogs give unconditional LOVE and after all, isn't that what GOD does? HE loves us unconditionally. For pete's sake, lighten up a little. Maybe even go out and buy some doggie treats and give them to some neighborhood dogs, along with a loving pat on the head. Or better yet, buy some bags of treats for your local Humane Shelter. You will no doubt make some friends and feel good about it.

God Bless!

Oh get a life please! It is hilarious and dressing up a dog for Halloween is fun. Eli is a great dog and the costume very funny indeed. He looks like the Pope too!

You must be the same people who commented on the "Curb your enthusiasm" episode last Sunday night... will you people get a life... it's only a costume. I think you should be more upset, shocked and appalled at the story of the 15 year old girl who was gang-raped while 20 + people watched and did nothing!! What is this world coming to. Maybe your cross is causing a glare in your judgement.

Halloween is a Christian holiday. Its All Hallow's Eve, the day before All Saint's Day (Nov 1). I'm catholic and I think its appropriate. God gave some of us a sense of humor.

As a Christian all I can say is lighten up people. People are always trying to find fault in everything. This is cute and gets a smile on some faces and I know Jesus would love it. More people need to learn to smile and love one another as Jesus taught while He was with us.
