Six finalists in the Creative Grooming Contest at the SuperZoo convention in Las Vegas earlier this month clipped, dyed, and pruned their dogs into visual representations of everything from Pac-Man to the garden of Eden.
These aren't the only folks who like to shave and dye their dogs. Aubrey O'Day is known for putting foils in her Maltese's fur, and who could forget these insane poodle transformations and China's latest dyeing trend.
Check out the gallery below to see their creative results and cast your vote for who you think should have won. Find out who actually took the big prize after the jump.

Poor pups......this is a bit extreme!
Yes this is too extreme you are absolutley right.. Those poor little faces say it all.. whats wrong with some of these owners.??
These people need to be arrested for cruelty. These dogs are living, breathing animals with feelings. It may seem harmless, but many of these owners use harsh chemicals and require the dogs to undergo grooming that can take several hours a day. It is just wrong.
Oh this doesn't hurt the dogs at all, you silly people. It would be the exact same to a dog as their usual grooming. The dyes are pet safe. It's a harmless cute little contest. I sure liked thing 1 and 2 best though! "live and let live"
this doesn't hurt them at all, its no different than a regular trip to the grooming salon. The dyes are pet friendly. This contest is very cute!! I love the pacman one. too cute!!!
How stupid these poor dogs look it should never ever be allowed the things some people will do to get in the Limelight I feel so sorry for the poor dogs if they were meant to look like that they would have been born like it the owners are sick!
Ive been a professional dog groomer for 10 years, these dogs look horrible!
Poor dogs! They look embarrassed, and although some folks said it's no different than a trip to the groomers, it HAS to take much more time to do these things than a regular grooming. The poor dog has to stand still through all of this. And you just know the other dogs on the block are making fun of them. :-) Truly, what this says to me is that, rather than having a dog to give it a loving home, the purpose of the dog, for these people, is for their (the owners') entertainment, and their prestige. A dog's life should be fun, not being trimmed and dyed and posed to meet some arbitrary human sense of fun or accomplishment.
These people should be shot. How humiliating for the dogs. I have two beautiful standards (a silver and a parti) and wouldn't even think of embarrassing them that way. Who is this for? Certainly not the dog. Maybe the groomer should let the dog dress them. Somebody should tell the ASPCA.
Pac-Poodle does not look unhappy to me. Anyone who knows poodles, knows they enjoy the attention they get while being groomed, and they enjoy the attention they get from the designs. Most dyes wash right out.
There is nothing wrong with a creative grooming.
How would you like it if your hairdresser did something like that to you. I would fire mine if she did that.
As a former groomer, I know these Poodles are used to all the brushing, and fluffing and they love being on the grooming table. I admire all the time and effort it took to create these fancy styles. As someone else said, 'the dye washes out' and the dogs really do love the attention. If you ever go to a dog show, check out the Poodles being groomed...half the time they're half asleep while being groomed!
Personally, I have never been into poodles. I think they're too high maintenance, and I don't particularly care for their looks. That's just my opinion. I do like dogs, though; and I do think grooming and attention are both relevant factors in achieving and maintaining canine contentment. That being said, don't feel too sorry for these poodles. That entire breed is littered with highly spoiled, over-the-top love sponges, so I seriously doubt they're unhappy with all the hoopla.
Do I think it's a bit much? Yeah. It's a bit much. However, saying the dogs look unhappy is also a bit much. Perhaps you, as a human, would be humiliated were someone to decorate you or your child in such a way, but these dogs, as has been mentioned before, are stupid-ridiculous into being petted and fawned over. There is no need to anthropomorphise them into pseudo-human entities who share the same level of dignity as humans do.
Seriously, if you really want to feel sorry for someone in this scenario, take a look at some of these miserable-looking owners, especially those whose designs aren't all that creative. It's like they have that, "All right, I know I lost. Let's just get this spanking over with," look on their faces.
Take care,
Azy!
Ever see Toddlers & Tiaras? People DO dress up their children like this- only much worse, since the little girls are paraded around in slutty outfits, not even half dressed in most cases. I've heard that those competitions attract a bunch of pedophiles. I may not have anything against these groomers, but those people deserve to have their kids taken away.
You obviously don't know much about poodles. They were bred to hunt and are far from foofy and prissy. My standard poodle has hiked to the top of 14,000ft mountains, and loves running in lakes, rivers and the ocean. There is NOTHING you can't train a poodle to do, including service dog work, and they do it all with a smile on their face and without shedding or smelling bad. They are the best 'designer dog' you could ask for. Why do you think all the puppy mills try to mix everything with them? Trying to get the good qualities of the poodle into these other stupid breeds like labs and cockers and goldens. Those mutts will never be as smart or attractive as a purebred poodle. And who says you have to groom it like a poodle anyway, they are so versatile you can clip them to look like anything you want. My toy poodle is cut like a kerry blue terrier and I've never met anyone who didn't think she was the cutest thing they'd ever seen. I have changed many people's opinions about poodles.
Yeah, yeah. And they can be trained to LOVE attention, and usually are. I don't deny that they can be trained to do anything any self-respecting Labrador can do. If you'll reread what I wrote, you'll notice that I stated the entire breed was littered with, not consisting entirely of, highly spoiled, over-the-top love sponges. Claiming that poodles were stupid or inferior was not part of my comment. I'm sorry you took it that way; and I'm glad your poodle is so masculine and anti-typical, but I fail to see the point in your expressed indignation.
So, what? Am I not allowed to dislike poodles because you're so into them? I do believe that I have just as much a right to an opinion as you do. And just for the record, all the poodles I'VE known ARE a bunch of love-sponging, spoilt-rotten attention beggars. That's why I've formed my personal OPINION.
Okay, the dye washes out, big deal. The dogs like being groomed, yeah, but that's under normal, average circumstances. Not for eight, nine hours a day while you clip away at their fur and nails repeatedly in experimental designs, then dye and re-dye their fur in attempt to get just the right color for whatever screwed-up little fantasy you have of your dog looking just so "adorable". People, this is sick. If you had fur and were someone's pet, you wouldn't want to suddenly be their furry Barbie doll. I'm sorry, this is just wrong.
Listen you idiots, calling this cruelty, I am one of the groomers pictured here with my mini poodle Renegade clipped in the Garden of Eden theme (that won the 1st place $2,000 prize), and creative grooming is anything but animal abuse. I have been grooming dogs for 14 years and know what is safe and healthy for my dog. He is 7 years old and my vet says he's the healthiest, happiest 7 yr old dog he sees (and he should know, he sees all my dogs monthly for anesthesia free teeth cleaning...and I'm a dog abuser?)! He is not only a champion retired show dog, but also a therapy dog who visits children's hospitals and alzheimers patients. He LOVES the attention people pay to him when he is colored, and has no problem standing still on a table for a couple of hours. In fact, he loves anything that puts a smile on people's faces. I created my design a little at a time so he doesn't have to stand for too long at a time. And I DO NOT do this to call attention to myself. I am a groomer and hairdresser and have a very busy successful shop. I don't need the attention. I entered the contest to HAVE FUN, AND BE CREATIVE! And the $2000 1st prize didn't hurt either. No one forced you to look at these pictures and no one asked for your stupid opinion about them. Is your life really that pathetic that you feel it necessary to put other people down for something they took a lot of time and effort to create? When I visit a museum I don't always like all of the art. That doesn't mean I criticize the artist for abusing the canvas. At my shop, I have owners who neglect grooming their dogs for months and, like others have said, skin infections develop, nails grow into the pads of their feet, ear infections develop, and hair becomes painfully matted until the matts actually pull the hair out at the skin. THAT is dog abuse. Bathing my dog every week and spending time clipping and coloring his hair is the OPPOSITE of abuse. Why don't you channel some of your energy into helping out some animals that actually are abused, like I do, volunteering at a local shelter (I must be a real dog abuser huh, spending my limited time off at the shelter and grooming rescue dogs for free). Then you'll see some dogs that are ACTUALLY abused and need rescuing. Leave us groomers alone. I bet half you stupid bloggers don't even have pets.
And no, not every dog is suited to be a creative grooming dog. I also have a standard poodle who would be mortified if I dyed her hair. I recognize her personality and would never subject her to this type of style. You see, a responsible groomer knows their dog and whether or not they are suited for competition. If the dog is unhappy, you will not get a good finished result and you will not win. There is no point to even enter with a dog that is not happy about being there. Of my 6 dogs I have only 3 that are suitable for competition. And I respect and treasure all of my dogs and would NEVER EVER DO ANYTHING that harmed them. All the dyes I use are safe vegetable based dyes that I would happily use in any of my people clients hair, or dog clients.
And just to put things in perspective for you, I bet I make more money in one day than all you haters put together. And I ACTUALLY enjoy my job, so HA!
This is all WRONG, WRONG, WRONG! I agree with mgrosh -- ANIMAL CRUELTY all the way!!!
This is wrong on so many levels.
