"Who are you calling ugly?" Photo: Dane Andrew/TEN

Beauty may be in the eye of the beholder, but Rascal, a 10-year-old Chinese crested dog, truly has a face that only a parent could love. Rascal currently holds more ugly dog contest titles than any other mutt in history -- and for good reason. With his waggling tongue and spiky mohawk, he's been mistaken for a tiny horse, a ferret and a chupacabra, says his owner Dane Andrew.

What's it like to spend every day with the world's ugliest dog? Andrew spoke to Paw Nation about life with Rascal.

What makes Rascal so ugly?
He grew up without a lot of his teeth, so his tongue hangs out. He's naturally hairless, with lots of warts and splotches. He has kind of a rat's tail and a mohawk. I think he's a great looking dog, and he grows on people. The first minute they see him there's a shock value but after they spend time with him, they say he's actually not that bad. I actually think he's very handsome.

What's his personality like?
He's healthy and full of energy. He's pretty exuberant, especially when he's around people he knows. He's a lot of fun. He doesn't bark at anyone and he always gets along with other dogs.

You've been around ugly dogs almost your whole life, haven't you?
Rascal's grandfather, a rescue named Chi Chi, was my birthday present when I was 11. I heard barking and my mom had me cover my eyes. When I uncovered them, there was this little charcoal-colored dog with no hair. I didn't even know what it was. He's in the Guinness Book of World Records for winning the World's Ugliest Dog contest eight times. Meanwhile, Rascal's grandmother Lady Pink won three times, and his mom Mai Tai won three times. Now Rascal is champion of the most ugly dog contests of any dog in history. He just won a second time at the world's Oldest Ugly Dog Contest. This is my 33rd year showing ugly dogs from this dynasty of four dogs. I didn't really set out to do that. It has turned into a really fun thing.

What's Rascal up to besides entering contests?
He's been on shows: "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno," "The View," "ET's Insider." He just finished his fourth show for Animal Planet, and he's being filmed for a documentary, "The Ugliest Dog." He's also started a horror movie career. He's got a few coming out right now that people have asked him to be in. You can see clips on his web site.

How does he enjoy his fame?
If he wasn't enjoying it, there wouldn't be any point in doing it. An animal psychic read him once. She said he likes all the attention. It's a good thing, because it's a good venue for Rascal to spread the word for people to adopt, to spay and neuter, and help bring money towards smaller shelters that really need people's donations. He's got a brand new leash line coming out, with a percentage of proceeds going to animal charity. He tries to do a lot of good with his notoriety.

Do you think he knows he's ugly?
He's fine with it. It doesn't hurt his feelings. When he wins, he knows he's getting some sort of prize. If he can't be the prettiest dog, he'll be the best he can be. If that means he'll be best at being ugliest, then that's what he's going to do.

The gave Rascal the title only because my mother-in-law got stuck in traffic and arrived at the contest too late to enter.

That is so funny, I was thinking the same thing about my EX MOTHER IN LAW!

Does your wife look like her mom?

That is too funny, but it is scary, as I look more like my mother everyday.... grrrrr

I DON'T JUDGE A DOG BY LOOK,I LOVE THEM FOR WHAT THEY ARE REPRESENT.

there's no such thing as an ugly dog

I couldn't agree more..I also believe that NO dog NOR NO animal is ugly...they are all unique and wonderful in their individual ways..I just wish people could be more like these sweet creatures!!!

Meg#9 Meg9-26-2009 @ 12:00AM

I agree! I personally think he looks adorable! It's too bad that there's been generation after generation of this family. Adopt from a shelter instead! I'm also tired of the Chinese Crested being the World's Ugliest Dog year after year. Why can't a hairy dog win? Why even have the darn contest? There is no such thing as an ugly dog! Besides, true ugliness comes from within and dogs are either sweet or they're trained to not be.

I've never seen an ugly dog but have seen so many ugly people. Why would sensible humans want to make such a determination. So many ugly humans...so many sweet dogs so lovely to behold.

Cyn#11 Cyn9-25-2009 @ 11:26AM

I hear ya, I see so many people being hateful and ugly to each other. When you have a dog, he's just happy to see you. He cheers you when you are blue. He sits with you when you are lonesome. I think most people need to go to obedience school. Don't you?

I think that Rascal is precious.I thought that this seemed mean except the owner loves him after reading his answers can see that he is well loved, does good & enjoys it.

Phyllis#13 Phyllis9-25-2009 @ 9:12AM

Rascal isn't ugly. He is different and unique......there's a difference!!! But I have to admit, I wouldn't want to meet him in a dark alley. I think it is wonderful, that the person who owns him, uses his fame, to help spread the word about so many important issues related to animals. I am an animal fanatic and always have been. I have always had some type of pet, even though I have to admit, that I love dogs (and cats). Rascal, your are a hero and your person is to. Keep on spreading the word and let us know when your leash line comes out. I am sure, Paw Nation wouldn't mind mentioning it.

lauren#14 lauren9-25-2009 @ 9:57AM

uhm... whoever has likened Rascal to a horse, is blind, or just plain dumb. Horses are covered in fur, dont have ratty tails, and usually dont have mohawks (foals do!) oh, and they have hooves. I think its a dead insult to call Rascal a horse, not just for Rascal (cuz he's obviously a dog), but for the horse as well (which are regal and beautiful). I'm not saying Rascal isn't beautiful, I think he's actually pretty cute. =P

Actually, I have a Chinese Crested Hairless also. When we let the hair on his head grow long and also on his paws, to a child he looks like a tiny horse. You can liken it to a Clidesdale. More than once I have heard a child say to their parent "Look,a horsey!"

And yes, my boy is beautiful. :o)

Jess#16 Jess9-25-2009 @ 10:33AM

He is so freakin' sweet!

I smiled a small smile when viewing this photo since I myself had one of these chinese crested mixtures. Her name was Candy and we loved her to death. We thought she was beautiful, but as a puppy she did look like a black rat. We got her back in the 1980's when there was this scare that came through stating that people were actually selling rats for dogs, so our relatives actually thought that is what we got since her parents came to us via California via Mexico. Unfortunately our prize chine crested only lived for 9 1/2 years, but we wouldn't have traded those years for anything.
