Man Shoots and Kills Pet Parrot For Being 'Annoying'
67 year-old Dennis Zeglin, irritated at his family's 20-year-old African grey parrot for disturbing him while watching a NASCAR race on television, pulled out a BB gun and shot the bird three times, killing it, reports the Star-Ledger.
Zeglin's wife, who was upstairs, heard the shots, came running downstairs and upon seeing Mikey's corpse and her husband sitting in a chair with his BB gun, called her husband a "crazy S.O.B." and called the police, writes the Daily Record.
When police officers and a local animal control officer arrived, Zeglin admitted that he shot Mikey "because he was annoying him while he watched TV." Zeglin was arrested and charged with animal cruelty and knowingly killing a parrot.
Zeglin's defense? He was drunk.
"I suspect it was a combination of the bird making a lot of noise, him wanting to watch the race, and having had too much alcohol," Zeglin's defense attorney, Stephen Fletcher, told the Star-Ledger. His attorney has asked the court to allow Zeglin to enter a pre-trial intervention program for first-time offenders, which would result in dismissed charges and a clean record if Zeglin completes the program, reports the Star-Ledger.
