Aubrey O'Day with her pet dog picture

Don't accuse Aubrey O'Day of hogging the spotlight. She wants to share it with her dog.

The former contestant on MTV's "Making the Band" and member of defunct girl group Danity Kane has gained a reputation for dyeing her one year-old Maltese Ginger a variety of bright colors. But, she tells UsMagazine.com, it's because Ginger "loves attention."

O'Day insists that her fluffy white dog "prefers" getting her hair colored and wearing gaudy outfits. "She likes to have looks," O'Day told Usmagazine.com. "She sits on my lap, and I have a brush, and I paint it on and use foils," she continued, adding that she only uses colors approved by her veterinarian. "It actually seems like such a taboo weird thing nowadays, but if you research online, you will see a whole underworld of dogs who are dyed."

Indeed, Paw Nation readers are already familiar with creative poodle grooming, trendy doggy dye jobs and what the nation's top pet groomers think of coloring your dog.

O'Day, who will star in the Las Vegas burlesque show "Peepshow" this month, has been derided on various websites for dyeing Ginger's hair pink and neon aqua blue, but she's got a supporter in celebrity groomer Jorge Bendersky of the New York Dog Spa.

"I'm always asked if dogs like to have their hair colored, and the answer is yes!" Bendersky writes in an email to Paw Nation. "If your dog is pink, it is not going to be ignored and your dog will enjoy the attention of lots of people." That said, Bendersky cautions that only animal-safe color should be used, and that even semi-permanent colors don't wash out immediately. "Be ready to have a red and green dog long after Christmas," he warns. "Along with a bunch of stained towels and floors." His recommendation? Try just a touch of color with a vegetable-based pigment, or let a professional groomer do it.

That dog should be at an AUBURN TIGERS football game

This broad is sick. Leave the poor dog alone or give it to someone who cares about it and not the attention it brings to her. So many animals suffer in this world, we don't need another suffering at the salon.

Aubrey says dogs like to have their hair colored, but dogs are color-blind! It wouldn't make any difference to them.

erin#6 erin9-11-2009 @ 11:37PM

In this state she'd be arrested for animal cruelty. Dying your dog is not a good idea. It could hurt the animal's health.

I'm completely mortified for this little pooch!!! Why do people insist on "dressing up" the small "purse" breeds? Isn't it humiliating enough to be toted around like an ornament....but to be technacolored is really insulting. Give the little Maltese her dignity!!! This sin't the worst..I did read of a woman who has a "pink" tea-cup poodle because she loves pink and the white poodle just did not match her furniture.

Richard....I really don't want to be in your friendship circle !!! I feel your sentiment about the assinine posts....but keep in mind most of them are "bots"...automatic (computer generated) posters not even human. Just damn annoying.

this "star" is sick --she is brain dead. the dog does not need this owner . the dog should be taken away from her. she is and ass hole!!!

Brenda#10 Brenda9-12-2009 @ 12:43AM

There is no need to do this to this little dog. She must be attention starved. Leave the poor little dog alone and smarten up.

Jay#11 Jay9-12-2009 @ 12:58AM

Whether it looks stupid or not isamatter of OPINION! As long as the dye is safe and doesnt harm the dog, I dont see anything wrong with it.

We dyed our whole gray/white horse bright green for a St. Patty's Day event. He was a big hit in the local parade, but he REALLY turned heads when he stuck his big green head out of the trailer door while we were parked at McDonalds for lunch after the parade. We used green food coloring- lots of it! Dying animals is totally harmless, as long as you use dyes that don't have harmful chemicals. There are people who think it's abuse, but dying is no different from simply wetting them. Pets love attention and affection. If dying them makes more of those things happen, then more power to tinted critters. :-)

Inkling#14 Inkling9-12-2009 @ 12:48PM

I think it depends on the dye. In any case, the dog looks unnatural and the owner is stupid for doing that just to get attention for herself.

Eileen#20 Eileen9-12-2009 @ 8:16AM

Someone should be giving the owner an orange mohawk and paint her feet blue. When people do that to an animakl that cannot protest I think that is disgusting. Feel sorry for the poor dog....
