A member of the Sporting Group, the Spinone Italiano is the 112th most popular breed in the United States, according to 2008 American Kennel Club® registration statistics. The Spinone has not been an AKC-recognized breed for long, but its sociable and affectionate temperament and distinctive appearance have gained it many admirers! With large, hanging ears, a scruffy beard and eyes described as "human-like," this pup's unforgettable face helped launch the breed onto the big screen in the recent film "Hotel for Dogs."

A Look Back
The Spinone Italiano, or Italian Pointer, is Italy's all-purpose hunting dog. An ancient breed, with origins in Northern Italty, his ancestors date back to 500 BC, when they were first called rough-coated hounds, bristled hounds, or "bacco spinoso." It is thought the breed was developed from coarse-haired Italian Setters, the White Mastiff and perhaps the French Griffon.

Did You Know...
The Spinone is used for hunting in all climates and terrain, following scent slowly and cautiously. Its prey stops...it stops, the prey moves again, and the pursuit resumes. His harsh, wiry coat and thick skin protects him from the rough brush in the field, icy waters and inclement weather. Today, however, many Spinoni excel in events beyond hunting, including conformation, obedience, tracking, agility events and therapy dog work. The breed's distinctive coat comes in a variety of colors such as solid white; white and orange; orange roan (an even mixture of white and colored hairs); white with brown markings, and brown roan. Some dogs can also have orange or brown markings.

Is a Spinone Italiano the right breed for your family?
An active, energetic breed, the Spinone loves to romp in the field, but is happy as long as it's with its family. They require daily exercise and companionship and can be very demanding of your attention. Owners should begin socializing and training the breed early, as the Spinone can be a cautious dog. However, they are a true "wash and wear" breed – no trimming or scissoring is needed, just weekly brushing and the occasional bath. Owners beware, however – after a drink, their wet and messy beard may leave trail of water wherever they go!
