Here's one dog you probably won't find begging grill-side any time soon.

Smokey, a 12-week-old chihuahua puppy, ended up with a large barbecue fork in his brain after the utensil snapped in half on the grill, flew through the air, and impaled the poor puppy's head, reports the Telegraph. The terrified pup then ran off into the woods, where he hid for two days.

When his owner Hughie Wagers finally found him, Smokey was taken straight to the Cumberland Valley Animal Hospital, in London, Kentucky, where Michelle Duncum was on duty. Duncum said, "[W]hen he brought him in we couldn't believe our eyes."

X-rays showed that the fork was actually in the dog's brain, so the vet, Dr. Keaton Smith, only gave Smokey a 50/50 chance of surviving its removal. The operation itself only took about 30 seconds -- they just shaved Smokey's head and pulled the fork out. Thankfully the pint-sized pup is recovering wonderfully.

"His nerve endings around the eye still seem to be a little slow but I think that will heal over time," said Smith. "He really is a little miracle."

Poor baby!!! I'm so happy that he is doing so much better. You'd think he wouldn't even be here at all with the way the fork pierced his head. Blessings to Smokey!

I am so glad he's doing so well. I'm not surprised that he survived since dogs are such amazing creatures in their ability to survive, heal, forgive and love. I have 3 Chi-Chi babies myself and they are wonderful little dogs with huge hearts!

umm to this Chi Chi person,

ok 1st of all, i dont like people like you. you just look at things on the messed up side. Many freak accidents occur and people live. this seems like a true story. they even showed a freakin fork in the dogs head. i dont understand y u wud bring obama into this also. he is helping america way better than george bush. you just want to find things wrong with the world just so that you can make a point that isnt true. people like you that just hate on people and miracles make me just realize how mean sum1 can be

People think chihuahua's aren't tough!! Smokey proved they may be small but they are tough as nails. What an awesome dog!

Tana#19 Tana7-15-2009 @ 11:28AM

Poor baby! Hard to believe this was an accident. BBQ forks that thick are pretty strong and I'm not seeing the top of the fork where it broke. I'm glad the pup is well but maybe you should take a closer look and find new owners.

On the breed side, Smokey looks EXACTLY like my red miniature pinscher!!

God bless and good luck, Smokey!! I hope you get the love and care you deserve!

Amen ChiChi! Who believes that stupid story. Here is how I see it happening. The guy is Bar-B-Quing, was drunk as a skunk. The dog started yapping. I have 2 Chis and know that this can get on your nerves. Especially if you're bombed and telling dirty jokes to your friends. The dog won't shut up so you poke the fork at the dog to get it to shut up and whoops, my arm is a little too long and I hit the little guy in the head! PLEASE! The Humane Society should look into this whole incident, as should the local authorities! The folk is metal, how did it break in half? MAGIC! Please evaluate this owner, it might be a kid next time! That said, God Bless you Smokey! I hope I'm wrong and I hope and pray you have a great life!
