After being rescued, Sunny the fawn faces euthanasia, while Sunny's rescuer is threatened with jail time.

Leslie Cain thought she was doing the right thing when she saved an orphaned baby deer she named Sunny. Investigators from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, however, were of a different opinion. Cain is under criminal investigation and faces 60 days in jail and a $500 fine after investigators learned that she had found Sunny in a subdivision in Ohio and took her across state lines to a farm in central Kentucky.

Say what?

Turns out, it's against the law to transport orphaned deer for fear of spreading disease. What's more, investigators have told Cain she needs to help them locate Sunny so the fawn can be euthanized. So far, Cain says she wants to cooperate, but claims she wouldn't be able to find the farm she brought Sunny to because she brought the fawn there at night (why she can't simply ask the friend of a friend who originally gave her the information for the location is a mystery). The outcome of Sunny's saga remains to be seen. Sunny, if you're reading this – make a run for it!

Don't we have better ways to spend our tax dollars?

nikoleye01#2 nikoleye016-23-2009 @ 8:30PM

Are you just kidding? She saves a deer and faces jail time! WOW!!! Why don't you go and fight real crime!

Cindy#3 Cindy6-23-2009 @ 8:41PM

What would they do if the deer just so happened to cross state lines on its own?

Katy#4 Katy6-23-2009 @ 8:45PM

What the heck does weight loss have to do with finding a baby deer?

Lawrence Travers#5 Lawrence Travers6-23-2009 @ 8:55PM

This makes me so angry that I wish children of the "experts"
meet with a dead end like they want to do with the fawn!....
Then, maybe better wisdom would prevail.

Terri#6 Terri6-23-2009 @ 9:01PM

It sickens me to think that these Ohio morons would kill a defensless baby deer because it crossed a state line. Hmmm, last time I looked, there is no border patrol for deer crossing in each state. Are these ODNR people just plain stupid or what. Maybe they should put up a REWARD sign that says "Wanted, Dead or Alive, Baby Deer, tan with white spots, may be dangerous because she is so cute". I swear, don't these idiots have something better to do then harrass a women who was trying to help. Good Idea, throw her in jail and kill the baby deer.....real nice!!!!! STUPID PEOPLE!!!!!! This is a perfect example of authority figures pushing their weight around because they can. I hope the baby deer grows up and kicks their butts.

dave#7 dave6-23-2009 @ 9:05PM

With the economy down so are the governments; (federal, state, county, city) incomes down. And just like the joke about the starving vulture the heck with patients. I'm gonna kill something. and as the hard times continue we can expect our eagle to pounce on every opportunity to pick our BONES!!!

rkprice28#8 rkprice286-23-2009 @ 9:05PM

They don't put up the "deer crossing" signs all along the borders, so the deer know they cant go any further and turn back around to their home state. LOL

I bet you that the state could just take a couple viles of blood, test them, find if there are any diseases and if not, let the damn doe be! If there are diseases, the human thing to do would be to, as hurtful as it is to say this, put it down. I cant justify saying that about every other deer out there with diseases, but in the case that this one has had human contact, the diseases it could have could now be being carried in those people. However, until they do tests, theres no point in killing a fawn thats disease free!

Seriously!?! We are spendng time and money prosecuting Nice People while Really Rotten People happily cross state lines, borders and go anywhere they want wreaking havoc and committing crimes.

This is truly one of the dumbest law enforcement moves ever.

I wouldn't turn in a fawn either, just out of principle.

chainsaw6966#11 chainsaw69666-23-2009 @ 9:28PM

Good ol' law enforcement using their time and our money for another 'worthy' cause. God forbid some real emergency arises!! If just once people would let other people that are trying to do the right thing, just move along about their business, and focus on real problems....this planet would come to a screeching halt!!! Leave the woman and that deer alone!

Its pretty sad that kindness continually gets punished. Come to Washington and if you are 15 years old you can intentionally, physically attack two woman thus causing your pit bull dog to then also attack these women, ripping their flesh down to the bone and walk away with no consequences except maybe your parents paying a fine. What kind of a world are we living in?

nmkdotcom#13 nmkdotcom6-23-2009 @ 9:53PM

too many of you seem to have zero common sense regarding wildlife
thankfully some do realize this and vow not to interfere with something they don't fully understand - more than likely that deer was NOT orphaned until a person took the fawn away from its mother - and even if somehow the doe was killed (probably by someone's automobile) Is it so terrible had the fawn died and some coyotes, foxes, vultures, beetles, ants, etc got a meal? What if the doe was killed by a highly virulent disease that she passed to her fawn - you think it's sad for one fawn to die, what if all the deer near this farm - wild and raised for dog food (yes my dog eats venison) succumb to a disease that naturally wouldn't have spread more than a few miles - what ignorant and short sighted comments I have seen here ie. "deer can walk over state lines" How many of you have seen a map of the Ohio/Kentucky border? Respect your wildlife enough to leave it alone.

Linda#14 Linda6-23-2009 @ 9:59PM

How sick is this??? The authorities want to euthanize a poor little innocent fawn so they can test it for diseases?? GIVE ME A FREAKING BREAK!!! All you guys have to do is take some blood from the little one & test it that way! What the hell are you thinking ? And to arrest the woman who brought the deer home to feed it & help nourish it bk to health? WHAT IS WRONG W/THIS PICTURE? I cannot believe you people! Apparently, she didn't realize she was doing anything illegal, so---all you have to do is let her know that she did wrong & ask that she not do this type of thing again! I AM THOROUGHLY OUTRAGED @ YOU SO- CALLED AUTHORITIES! GET A GRIP & AT LEAST THANK THIS WOMAN FOR TRYING TO DO HER BEST TO SAVE THE POOR LITTLE FAWN & BRING IT TO AN ANIMAL REFUGE 'TIL IT'S OLD ENOUGH TO BE RELEASED INTO THE WILD!!!! TEST IT & BE DONE W/THE ISSUE!! THERE ARE MORE IMPORTANT ISSUES OUT THERE TODAY TO BE TRYING TO CONJURE UP CHARGES ON SOMEONE WHO THOUGHT THAT SHE WAS TRYING TO HELP OUT AN ANIMAL!!! YOU ALL SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF YOURSELVES & I HOPE I NEVER MEET ANY OF YOU, FOR I WLD PERSONALLY GIVE YOU ALL A PIECE OF MY MIND!! TO KILL AN ANIMAL TO TEST IT FOR DISEASES??? WHAT IN THE HELL IS THIS WORLD COMING TO? bETTER YET---WHAT THE HELL ARE YA THINKING??? God bless the woman involved & I hope that the charges are dropped !! Thank you----I think!!!!!!

Mary#15 Mary6-23-2009 @ 10:09PM

Something is really wrong when a big fat cop in Chicago can beat a tiny female bartender and get off with probation, while this woman, who saved a baby deer, could go to jail for doing so. How screwed up are the laws that allow this?

de#16 de6-23-2009 @ 10:21PM

I mean like hello she was trying to help the deer poor thing
she is only guilty of transporting nothing else
any human being would of done the same thing

cathy#17 cathy6-23-2009 @ 10:28PM

yougot to be dkidding me the woman was only helping a deer oh my god but the deer travel were ever whats the problem they have nothing better to do good luck to the woman she did a nice deed people she protest this

krissy#18 krissy6-23-2009 @ 10:37PM

Law enforcement has too much time on their hands. I wouldn't turn the fawn over either. Disease bah~ I would go to jail just for the principle of it.

claude#19 claude6-23-2009 @ 10:38PM

don't you think it will be more helpfull to change the law itself and let that poor women alone? Are they that ignorant ?
Do they (animals) know the boundry between states? does each state has a preset number and color of different animals or they may have an ID stamped on there asses for everybody to see?

FRED#20 FRED6-23-2009 @ 10:44PM

The only way to test for CWD is to have the brain stem!! With all the technology we have thats it!!!! I can understand the DOW, but I can also understand the people, if it had been a dog it would of been ok, how about a cat???? Just like smoking and alcohol, they are the animal of choice and it's ok. No wonder this nations going broke, we have people checking on people, tests that check tests, what happened to the original reason people settled this continent, FREEDOM!!!!!!! You go girl, don't tell them a thing, we are behind you all the way, be FREE, and if it takes saving a deer for that to happen then let it be!!!!!!
