Hide your children! A vicious kitten is on the loose!

Ok, not really, but Elly the kitten's antics are definitely creating some controversy. Ken Ridge, 65, and his son Bradley, 30, were informed that postmen were refusing delivery to their house after a worker's hand was scratched while putting mail through the letterbox.

"Elly is only a kitten and I'm sure she was just playing," Ken told the Daily Mail, adding, "Everyone finds it so amusing that our playful kitten has been mistaken for some savage beast."

Actually, not everyone is amused. A spokesman for Royal Mail said, "We record about 5,000 animal attacks on our postmen and women each year with the vast majority being dogs. The member of staff suffered a very bad cut to her hand which required treatment while delivering mail through the letterbox of the address."

Ridge received a letter stating that, unless he takes measures to prevent another attack, mail delivery to his home could be suspended. However, he plans to ignore the warning, insisting the incident is laughable.

What do you think? Is it laughable? Lamentable? Intolerable? Speak up in the comments!

They must have put their whole hand inside the mail slot! Kitten just saw a toy and tried to grab it. I thought Brits were tougher than this!

I have a few dogs and cats and I wouldn't consider feeding them anything but Life's Abundance pet food, it is holistic human quality food and with the finest ingredients you can buy anyplace. There is no corn, wheat, dairy, by-products, artificial colors or flavors in Life's Abundance. I buy it at http://petwellnessstore.com It is made in small batches and shipped out fresh, directly to my house, not stored in warehouses, for who knows how long, like the commercial brands. I know that it is made in a USDA certified APHIS plant so I know they will never be any recalls because of contaminated ingredients. I love our pets too much to serve them less. http://petwellnessstore.com

No, it is not so funny! As a nurse, I can tell you that hand injuries, yes, even stratches, cause more infections than most every other part of the human body. I personally know of a man who had a finger amputated because of a wound that was badly infected in days! This was a mere scratch caused by another person's tooth!!Proper care was taken at the initial time of the injury, but because the infection travels quickly, it became extremely serious in a very short time.

Pet owners need to show some respect for non pet owners and others around them. Postal owner is in the right...pet owner is proud, inconsiderate and rude. If I had an alligator and it bit you, would you bitch? If my cow crapped on your welcome mat like neighbors cats do to mine, would you complain? If my pet lion chewed on your leg like neighbors dogs have done to me, would it bother you? Yet, in every instance of animal attack to me in my life, the pet owners "had the right" and were mad at me because I did not like being violated. Pet owners are rude.

Problem easily fixed...build a box that will contain the mail, but the cat cannot get to the post(person). The box should have a flip lid on the inside of the door and a slot onthe outside...wdyt?

nick#9 nick6-21-2009 @ 3:38PM

wow john you sound like a pussy, you were violated by kitten?

char#10 char6-21-2009 @ 3:49PM

Well, I am very fond of cats, However not knowing what was on the other side of the door and being scratched bitten or other wise would cause concern, I think the problem we have anymore is communications, no speaks to anyone anymore, ask the home owner sure he would have loved to share.

the other side of this is if the home owner does not take care of the pet as they should they do carry alot of different germs as does the human race.

I think that maybe when you need to enter something into an area where you are not sure what is on the other side then use a stick or some object to open the slot and dump the articles in and leave, there no touching and job is done!!!! come on people get creative.

NOT TO ANY SPECIFIC OK MAY JOHN!!! lil' non animal person there?
Ok, I am not going to laugh even though it was funny, However PEOPLE PEOPLE, why can't people just talk to each other any more, knock on the door and ask the home owner about the situation, communication? Do we know what this is anymore!!!! come on. I am very fond of cats and animals in general I also own them. Things happen no matter how much you try to prevent it. It's like having children no matter how much you watch them, they are still bound to get into trouble (I know).

Talk to each other, I am sure not knowing what was on the other side of the door that got you is scary! However asking the home owner; who I am sure would have been glad to share with you, could have helped.

I also know in both situations, talking amongst each other; it could have been resolved, as a mail person and dealing with many situations you would improvise right? Don’t stick your hands or any other body part in blind spots, use a stick or something to open the hatch, and then make deposit.

The home owner could put up a cage around the door drop or keep the cat in another room.

As in any pet and human you do not know what kind of germs anyone person or pet carries.

NOT ALL PEOPLE TAKE THE RIGHT CARE WITH THEIR CHILDREN AND NOT ALL PET OWNERS TAKE THE RIGHT CARE WITH THEIR PETS.

THE STRIKE THING IS GOING A LITTLE TOO FAR....
DOES ANY ONE TAKE RESPONSIBILITY ANY MORE.....

Having had a scratch from a cat, believe me, it can be painful. Knowing of the danger of infection, I cleaned it, covered it with a bandage, and it took some while to heal. Also, after a kitten bite, my vet inisisted I call my doc, who promptly put me on an antibiotic. An infection from a cat bite can be dangerous, and enter he bloodstream. This is from a cat and dog lover, too!!!

Robert DeLong#13 Robert DeLong6-21-2009 @ 5:11PM

This is not a matter of danger. It is a matter of courtesy. Any pet owner is responsible for the behavior of their pet. A small scratch from an animal can become infected and who has to endure it ---not the owner.
Why should a person have to live wondering what the animal at this hopuse is going to attempt today.
I am with the postal letter carrier.

F H#14 F H6-21-2009 @ 5:14PM

Dear postal worker:

I am sorry to hear of your injury. Lesson learned-don't put fingers or hands through slots in doors, something may happen.
Isn't this in the country that stood firm in the Battle of Britian? That persevered in the face of V1 and V2 rockets? Sad to see the changes that have occured in a short 79 years.

Mikeles#15 Mikeles6-21-2009 @ 5:21PM

Cats, dogs, kittens, puppies, it doesn't make a difference. If the mailperson is scratched, then carriers are justified in not delivering, especially if the owner finds it "laughable". The workers can get an infection from such a wound. It isn't laughable. Period.

It must be a slow day for news? My God, get a life. Cats and kittens play.they are so great to have. they love you no matter what.

CATS RULE.... Some post men do not!

PJ#18 PJ6-21-2009 @ 6:28PM

This is not a laughing matter. Cats carry germs that can cause a person to need serious medical attention. My own cat caused my hand to swell twice it's normal size, and I had to have antibodies to fight the infection. You could loose a hand from a cat scratch, or a bite.

Having delivered mail to a house that had the same problem with a dog that would grab the mail from my hand on the other side of a mail slot, this can be a very scarey experience. You must take these situations seriously.

Shelly#19 Shelly6-21-2009 @ 6:29PM

I agree with the postman. People think cats are cute and they can be, but they do attack for no reason. I know this to be true as I have a scar on my calf about 6 inches long from a cat that jumped out of a bush when I happened to be walking down a sidewalk. So I can't blame the post man. If dogs have to be on leashes then same should be true for cats. They damage property as well as smell up the outside of your house by using your flower beds as litter boxes.

George#20 George6-21-2009 @ 6:36PM

Cat scratches are nothing to laugh about. Last summer my aunt got some minor cat scratches. They infected, she was in intensive care for a couple of weeks, a rehab center for a couple of months, and still requires home trreatment a couple of days a week. The cost of that cat scratch is probably in excess of $100,000.
