Nitro the K-9 dog's picture

Photo: Officer Steve Timmons, Aberdeen Police Department

Poor Nitro. The six year-old German Shepherd police dog tried not to take it personally when he was laid off from the Aberdeen Police Department last month. Police Chief Bob Torgerson blamed it on budget cuts, which forced him to eliminate Nitro's job, which costs the department $12,000 annually, reports the Seattle Times.

Most of that $12,000 is comprised of overtime pay for K-9 police officer Steve Timmons to care for Nitro during off hours. Timmons offered to donate his time and work for free, but the department, union rules and federal and state labor laws made that an impossibility.

Instead, after Nitro was laid off, Officer Timmons started fundraising to bring back his canine partner, who had helped collar 35 to 40 suspects since joining the force in 2005.

Officer Timmons' efforts paid off and he raised $13,000 --- enough for Nitro to re-join the force and work for the next year and a half. "He's anxious to get back to work," Officer Timmons said, appearing this week with Nitro on a televised interview.

Where would we be without Unions? Much further ahead.

ibtblet182#3 ibtblet1826-20-2009 @ 6:23PM

CK, You have no idea what a union is for or what a union has gotten you or your family or you would not be spouting the talking points you heard on fox comedy channel. Why dont you read up on the subject and then spout off. With out unions this country would have had a hard time countering some of the same effects of countries turn of the last century. Plus Work rules that non union workers have would be non existent. So how in fact would you be further ahead unless you mean you beleive in slave labor? Or child Labor or Working for free? Hmmm, it may start off with a dog on off hours then its paperwork then its a couple hors then its an inch into a mile. Your really pretty dumb. Further ahead indeed.
I guess your model is to be a china or somewhere without unions that traffick in human rights violation and child and slave labor for cheap wages thats further ahead indeed!!!!! DUMB A**

Ibt - I can see why you need union support. You are semi-illiterate. You are the kind of worker who will sit on your fat behind during work hours and because of stupid union rules, you can get away with it. Go back to school, learn basic spelling, typing and then maybe you can progress to learning a real trade - how to be a productive member of a work force.

unions Had a place now they don't. osha and a dozens of other state and federal entities control virtually every facet of the american work place. Union exist now to enrich union bosses and politicians to whome they give lage sums of money which should be called bribes for that is what they are. The legacy costs of health care and rediculous retirement plans have bankrupted all the major airlines, the unionized auto industry, the steel industry, and are well on the way to bankrupting most states with california and mass leading the way. It is ok to say we wouldn't have gotten to where we are without them, to say we need them to move forward is bs they are largely responsible for holding us back now. they the unions are the echo of the past not the wave of the future. One of the most successful unions currrently is the nea, if you think that the education system in this country has improved in the last 50 years you are sadly missguided. They and their rules have dumbed
down our system tremendously. I am col ed i have several degrees
including one in education, retired military, officer, worked for several large corps, worked in aviation and transportation industry. in my youth i held a variety of jobs in the construction and farming. I know my way around the american work place from all angles and capacities.

GOOD BOY NITRO, GLAD THAT U WILL BE BACK TO WORK SOON. CATCH THOSE BAD GUYS FOR US !

Unions may have served a useful purpose 75 years ago, but, now the only purpose they serve is greed and the destruction of America.Ibtblet182 is a good example. Gimmie, gimmie, gimmie and call other people names. Classy.

It makes absolutely no sense to me why he could not take care of Nitro in his home and on his own time without pay. Maybe the rules should be changed. I never knew that the human partner received payment for the priviledge of keeping the dog at home with him all the time...why charge the tax payers? I have raised Dobermans and know that my dogs are members of my family...I would imagine that Nitro is like family to his partner as well. It is just plain stupid to take away a valuable asset from this police officer because of an obviously ill conceived RULE.

I think everybody so far has gotten off the track of what the story was about - a policeman who really cared about his canine partner, and what he did about it. I applaud the policeman!

what dores the dog eat? caviar and grade A prime, and Champagne?? GG!! I don't spend 1,000/month to eat and drink on myself!! nor on my dog, I spend about 20.00/month on dogfood, the rest is just water and table scraps, the vet bills less than 300.00/year.. license, checkups and shots (every 3-5 yrs for rabies) I'd like to know what creative accountant writes off 12,000 dollars/annum on a police dog or any other dog for Gawd Sakes

PJ#11 PJ6-20-2009 @ 10:27PM

Silly, read the article. Most of that goes to the officer for the care of the dog on his off hours.

mage0213#12 mage02136-20-2009 @ 8:15PM

I wish I could afford 1,000.00/month to eat, sleep, sniff out drugs, go for car rides and snarl at everyone ROTFLMAO
