World's oldest dog

She can't hear very well, wears special doggy glasses and sports a sweater on chilly days, but Chanel, a 20-year-old dachshund who lives with her owner in Port Jefferson Station, NY, looks pretty good for her age -- she is, after all, the world's oldest dog. Chanel will set a new record when she turns 21-years-old tomorrow (that's 147 in human years!).

Technically, her title will be official in September – when the Guinness Book of World Records makes it legit. Jay Leno is already banging on her door.

"She's independent. If she didn't want to do something, she had a look she would give, and she usually got her way," Chanel's owner Denice Shaughnessy told the New York Post. The pooch is in the center of a media frenzy, appearing on NBC's TODAY Show this morning. Co-hosts Meredith Vieira and Matt Lauer couldn't stop smiling at the darling dachshund, who's brown hair turned white years ago.

Now that Chanel is turning 21, "She can drink whiskey out of a toilet," joked Vieira.

Playing off Chanel's "wiener dog" breed, Lauer said the dachshund was "the oldest hot dog I've seen since that barbecue at your [Vieira's] place."

Be nice fellas...

Chanel wears glasses because of cataracts, and only eats boiled chicken with whole-wheat pasta because her teeth are so brittle.

But Chanel doesn't let those obstacles keep her at home. "She still enjoys a walk, but now she's carried for a lot of it," said Shaughnessy.

Happy Birthday Chanel. And many more. I just had my 13 1/2 year old American Cocker put down yesterday and it was so hard to do. It was best for her but worst for me. I know your owners love you like I loved her. I will miss her every day. Good luck to you. You are beautiful.

We all love I`ll animals, but when do it come to an end? There one loving person don`t feel the pain when the legs are going, yes you can get something for the rear legs, but then the front start that the end of your loving animal. But no from these animal lover. The animal in your care is your child and it can`t tell you when it hurt. That the lover job to see that your child did not come to the door when you came in. Then you go and get some help for your loving animal. Think about your animal it`s blind and hurting legs.and all you can talk about is his age.

My dog, Elizabeth, according to the vet, will be 21 in August. She's completely blind in her right eye, doesn't hear well, has lost control of her bladder, most of her teeth are gone, and she has arthritis. She had a stroke a couple weeks ago and would not move for about 5 days. We probably should put her down but she's been a excellent companion, to us and our six kids. So I take care of her now that she needs it-I give her aspirin for her arthritis, keep her on a low protien diet for her kidneys, rub her body to help with circulation, I even sleep in the garage with her if it's storming cause storms seem to bother her now days and she tries to take the whole sleepbag but her being as old as she is -She deserves it!

Denice,
I am so sorry for the loss of your dear friend and companion Chanel. There'll only be one like her. Six weeks ago I lost my almost 18 year old Bridgette - also a Humane Society adoptee. She and Chanel had a lot in common. Couldn't hear, cataracts, whitening hair, would stare at one spot for an hour but still had that feistiness that her soul was still there somewhere even though it would get temporarily lost. Keep yourself surrounded by memories of her and never try to replace her - They're as unique as snowflakes and fingerprints. It wasn't Bridgette's honor to have found me. . . it was my honor to have found and loved her!
