It may seem like every Hollywood starlet owns a teacup terrier, but tiny pups are actually the underdog in Los Angeles. According to the American Kennel Club's annual survey of purebred dog breeds by city, Los Angeleans love their labs, bulldogs, German shepherds, and golden retrievers. Conversely, not everything is bigger in Texas: most major cities cite Yorkshire terriers among their top dogs. Does your city's reputation match its dog selection?

Popular Dog Breeds By City

    Labrador Retriever
The lovable Labrador Retriever remains the nation's #1 most popular purebred dog breed for 18 years running. Except in Detroit and Miami, where the German Shepherd is top dog.

    Portuguese Water Dog
Ranked only 64th nationally, the Portuguese Water Dog failed to make the Top 10 list in any city in 2008. Let's see how this once little-known breed does next year after skyrocketing to fame as the Obamas' choice of dog.

    Alex Korab, AOL

    Bulldog
The pugnacious-looking bulldog muscled its way to into the nation's Top 10, but failed to make the list in Honolulu, Minneapolis-St. Paul, Portland, Raleigh, and Salt Lake City.

    French Bulldog
This adorable pooch has become one of the hottest dogs to own -- if you live in trend-setting cities such as Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, and Miami -- where the French Bulldog makes the Top 10 list. Nationally, the compact companion dog ranks 26th in popularity.

    Chihuahua
Which American city has the biggest love affair with small dogs? Portland! It has the highest percentage of small dog breeds on their Top 10 list, including the Chihuahua at the #2 spot.

    Jupiter Images

    Great Dane
Only one city put the Great Dane in its Top 10 list: St. Louis. Nationally, the breed ranks 22nd.

    Yorkshire Terrier
Attention Yorkies: leave Des Moines off your cross country road trip! The Iow city snubbed the immensely popular Yorkshire Terrier (ranked #2 nationally) and didn't even allow it onto their Top 10 list.

    Jupiter Images

    Boxer
The Boxer, with its endearing eyes and droopy jowls, is the second most popular dog breed in Omaha for the second year in a row.

    Jupiter Images

    Cocker Spaniel
Is Oprah's influence fading? Once the most popular dog in the country for 25 years, the Cocker Spaniel seems to have fallen out of favor. In cities such as Washington D.C., Sacramento, Detroit, and Des Moines, the breed still ranks in the Top 10 list. Nationally, it's 21st.

    Poodle
Poodles ain't okay in Oklahoma City, where the breed dropped off the Top 10 list. But oodles of poodle owners in other parts of the country keep this breed at the #8 spot nationally.

I'm so happy to read these comments especioally the one where the owner had a problem training the dog. First, I'd like to tell you about a friend who had a black lab. Beautiful dog. My son was about 3 years old and the friend who had the black lab was visiting. Jeff (my son) was being naughty and I reached for him to discipline him. The lab very gently, but firmly, took my wrist to let me know "no you don't lady" - you aren't going to discipline Jeff that way. Of course, the lab won.

I've wanted a lab for a long time but have not been able to get one because I live in a small condo. I'm handicapped and have given some thought to getting an assistance dog - and naturally, I would want a lab - but I still hesitate because of where I live.

I have 2 rescue dogs - suipposedly one is Chihuahua-Maltese mix (Ive had him since he was a pup) but someone goofed with that - not a 19 1/2 pounds he isn't that mixtuire. The other is an adorable little Chihuahua. About 3 years ago, I began having a problem with Moses (the mixed dog) and he bit me - there was no provocation. He has done this at least 10 times or more since then. His behavior has gotten quite erratic. Of course, I've taken him to the vet to rule out a physical problem. The dog is well. I had the Chihuahua for at least a year then, so I ruled out the jealously angle. Last night, the 2 dogs and I were in bed watching TV and Moses brought his chewie to bed with him. He wasn't chewing on the chewie but laid next to me and acted like he wanted to be petted. So, I was going to pet him. Suddenly, he growled and bit me. There was no provocation. The bites are very vengeful and painful. I've always said that I wouldn't have a dog that I'm afraid of - I don't know that I'm afraid of Moses, but I do watch what I do around him. I can't see myself putting a perfectly healthy dog down but I'm at a total loss as to what to do. I've thought of putting him with a trainer but I wonder if that would work particularly since I cannot take an active role in training him becauise of my disability. All suggestions are welcome.

I dont know how this article has fueled such a debate about pitbulls vs. labs. POPULAR DOES NOT NECCESARILY MEAN BEST!! I will say that I am partial to labs, but I love my border collie. I do however understand that even though I love my dog, that she is not the best dog (breed) for everyone. She is far from popular. And I am cool with that. I will say that I have met both great and terrible dogs from both breeds (pits and labs). Breeding and a good pet parent play a HUGE part. Here in southern Jersey, the most common breeds in shelters are rottis and pits.

kssumlin#8 kssumlin4-21-2009 @ 7:29AM

Unfortunately labs are also the most breed dogs you will find in shelters.

night6504#9 night65044-21-2009 @ 7:38AM

labs do not have the highest numbers in shelters! pit bulls do. Check on petfinder.com the numbers are right there. unfortunately, pits and bullies are usually the best dogs in my book. my pit bull has been attacked by a lab and a golden retriever. the retriever drem blood from my pit and the lab drew blood from me and what did the pit do? go into submission. real viscious, huh?

Unfortunatly you are right. But that could change if people did as my husband and I did.Instead of forking out a wad of money for a new puppy,we went to the local shelter and thats where we found a new member of the family as we lovingly call "GIZMO".He was infested with heartworms and only weighed 41 pounds. After a lot of medical care and lots of TLC he is the best dog I have ever owned or met.He is so well behaved and loyal. He is now 100 pounds and he thinks every guest that walks thru the front door is here to see him.He immediately goes right up to them and sits until they acknowledge his presence. He obeys every command and never and do mean NEVER climbs on furniture(even if we invite him)or makes a boo boo in the house. Its totally amazing. He is our other child and I dont know what our family would of been like without him.We love him soooo much!!

Noel#11 Noel4-21-2009 @ 1:04PM

I think that depends on what part of the country you are in. In southern california most of the shelter dogs are boxers and put bulls not Labs.

Leslie#12 Leslie4-24-2009 @ 1:25PM

yes, a lot of labs/dogs are in shelters because people don't research a breed before getting it and once they do on the whim, they aren't willing to accept the work and responsibility that goes into dog ownership. Would they toss their child aside because they don't want to teach it? Makes me sick the amount of unwanted critters there are.

We have beloved poodles. But--- Is there anything cuter than a Lab puppy!

I have a burnese mountain dog. I have a string of jingle bells on my back door and he hits it with his nose to let me know he has to pee. Smart Dog. Hi there

Ironhead#17 Ironhead4-21-2009 @ 7:42AM

I thought this was about the most popular Dog?? All anyone has to do is ask any vet the next time you go with your cat/dog which dog is the most seen by him in any month of the year and they will always say the "PITBULL". The Pitbull is the most popular in this
country and Canada just ask any Veterinarian.
The word was POPULAR..........................

dave#18 dave4-26-2009 @ 7:45AM

I have a pitbull who could not be more friendly and loving. Fact is they are loyal and affectionate to there owners.....also they get along well with others.

bev#19 bev4-21-2009 @ 8:17AM

Thought I would call my vet for the heck of it to ask what you said, that pittbulls are the most popular and this was his reply: Absolutely not and I have been known to recommend dogs from time to time but I would never dream of recommending a pitt bull to anyone.

Tiff#20 Tiff4-21-2009 @ 9:05AM

I totally agree. Our pitbull is amazing, I'll never own another breed. I see them everywhere, too bad their restricted in most places.
