Sadie, the second cocker spaniel puppy adopted by Oprah Winfrey from the PAWS animal shelter in Chicago, is "holding steady" after being diagnosed with canine parvovirus, reports the Chicago Tribune. Her littermate Ivan died earlier this month from the virus.

Oprah excitedly introduced audience members to Sadie on the March 6 episode of the Oprah Winfrey Show.

Parvovirus, commonly known as parvo, is a deadly viral disease seen most often in dogs and puppies. It attacks the lining of the digestive system and prevents the animal from absorbing nutrients or liquids. Early symptoms include vomiting, high fever, and sever diarrhea. Parvo can be prevented with early vaccinations.

Sorry to hear about the puppy. I had a new English Springer Puppy that I lost to parvovirus a few years ago. He was only six weeks old, my vet said that the mother had to have been infected inorder for puppies that age to be infected. I had to get a booster parvo shot for my other dog, then spray everything the puppy touched with chlorox mixed with water 10:1. And wash everything with chlorox, we even had to spray the grass outside because parvo can live in the ground. It will go below the freeze level in the winter and resurface in the warm weather. Then the vet burned the bedding and toys that the puppy had used. I was also warned by my vet to wait atleast six months before I acquired another puppy.

Good luck with your other puppy....
